Role Summary
The Senior Risk Management Director leads the vision and strategic direction for the company’s risk management function, supporting and advancing organizational objectives across enterprise risk management, corporate insurance, and organizational resiliency. This role drives execution to reduce exposure, strengthen preparedness, and enable proactive risk-informed planning and decision-making. On-site at either Durham, NC or Silver Spring, MD location a minimum of 3 days a week. Responsibilities
ENTERPRISE RISK MANAGEMENT: Ensure successful execution of the Department's strategic goals, administer ERM program activities, assist leaders in identifying exposures to loss, implement risk management strategies, and maintain a Risk Management Program Manual CORPORATE INSURANCE: Lead Property, Casualty and Management liability insurance programs; negotiate coverage, pricing, structure and limits; conduct cost/benefit analyses; manage broker and insurer relationships; ensure compliance with Clinical Trial Insurance SOP CONTRACT REVIEW: Review leases, business opportunities, clinical trial agreements, contracts to ensure appropriate wording and compliance with risk policies ORGANIZATIONAL RESILIENCY: Oversee business continuity planning; lead Corporate Resiliency Program; ensure critical functions can resume operations; test plans regularly; review facilities for loss reduction; review insurer loss prevention reports Provide ongoing risk management and insurance subject matter expertise, guidance, and collaboration across the organization Other duties as assigned Qualifications
Required:
15+ years of risk management and/or commercial insurance experience with a Bachelor's Degree in business, finance, or risk management OR 13+ years with a Master’s Degree in business, finance, or risk management Required:
10+ years of experience in biotech or pharmaceutical industry, including global clinical trial risk strategy Required:
5+ years of experience as a functional leader and/or people manager Required:
Ability to read, understand, explain, and negotiate insurance policy language; subject matter expert in commercial insurance, ERM, and organizational resilience Required:
Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong interpersonal and leadership abilities; proficient in Microsoft Office Required:
Ability to engage with all levels of the organization, including executive leadership and board, delivering risk insights with clarity and impact; strategic and operational execution capabilities Required:
Deep understanding of contractual risk and indemnification provisions in life sciences; proven ability to lead ERM processes and cross-functional risk initiatives; team leadership experience Required:
Ability to develop others, provide feedback, manage conflict, and foster cross-disciplinary collaboration Preferred:
Master’s Degree (MBA, JD, or equivalent) Preferred:
Certified Risk Manager (CRM); Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU); Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC); Associate in Risk Management (ARM) Preferred:
Safety, loss prevention, and claims experience Education
