Overview Description

The Director of Professional Coding is responsible for leading and managing professional coding operations across the health system, reporting directly to the Senior Director of Coding. This role ensures coding accuracy, regulatory compliance, revenue integrity, and operational efficiency for professional (physician and provider) services. The Director will oversee coding teams, collaborate with clinical, financial, and IT stakeholders, and drive continuous improvement in professional coding processes.

Responsibilities

Operational Leadership Direct daily operations of professional coding teams for physician and provider services.

Oversee coding workflows, audit response, and corrective action planning.

Monitor and manage performance metrics including DNFB (Discharged Not Final Billed), coding productivity, and denial rates.

Ensure timely and accurate submission of professional claims.

Compliance & Quality Ensure adherence to payer-specific guidelines, CMS, OIG, and other regulatory requirements.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of professional coding regulations and requirements.

Lead internal and external coding audits and implement quality improvement plans.

Technology & Process Improvement Support implementation and optimization of coding technology solutions, including EHR integration.

Collaborate with IT and coding teams to enhance documentation and coding integration.

Evaluate and deploy automation solutions to improve coding efficiency.

Vendor & Stakeholder Management Manage relationships with outsourced professional coding vendors and ensure SLA compliance.

Partner with CDI, compliance, revenue cycle, and clinical departments to align coding practices.

Provide regular updates to the Senior Director of Coding and executive leadership on coding performance and strategic initiatives.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field (Master’s preferred).

CCS-P and/or CPC required

Minimum 5–7 years of progressive leadership experience in professional coding operations.

Deep understanding of professional coding and coding workflows, regulations, and technologies.

Experience with Epic or other major EHR systems preferred.

Strong analytical, communication, and change management skills.

Preferred Skills Experience leading professional coding operations in a multi-entity or academic health system.

Familiarity with risk adjustment, HCC coding and value-based care models.

Proven success in implementing coding automation platforms.

Ability to synthesize data and present actionable insights to senior leadership.

Compensation The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $127,044 - $190,565 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
