
Controller/Accounting Director

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Controller/Accounting Director is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the church with excellence, integrity, and a heart for stewardship. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, regulatory compliance, and transparent financial practices that support the church's mission and ministry. The Controller partners with pastoral leadership, ministry leaders, and staff to provide timely financial insight and guidance while modeling biblical stewardship and servant leadership.
ESSENTIAL, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Strong knowledge of nonprofit/church accounting principles Working knowledge of GAAP Demonstrated commitment to accuracy, integrity, confidentiality, and stewardship Ability to function as a hands-on, detail-oriented accounting leader in a lean staff environment Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills Ability to clearly communicate financial information to non-financial leaders Demonstrated servant leadership mindset aligned with a ministry culture DUTIES
Financial Management & Reporting
Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and month-end/year-end close Prepare timely, accurate financial statements for leadership, elders/board, and ministry leaders Assist in the development and monitoring of budgets in collaboration with church leadership Month-End Close & Financial Controls
Lead and personally complete month-end and year-end close processes, including bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations. Ensure timely and accurate posting of all transactions across funds and accounts. Review accounts for accuracy, completeness, and proper classification in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit best practices Maintain schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for financial statements and audits Establish and enforce internal controls appropriate for a lean accounting team, ensuring proper segregation of duties Supervise, train, and review work performed by the accounting staff and contractors Compliance, Audit, and Giving Oversight
Ensure compliance with IRS, state, and local regulations applicable to churches and nonprofit organizations. Oversee preparation for annual audits, reviews, or compilations; serve as primary liaison with external auditors. Oversee sales tax filings, W-2s, 1099s, and other required reporting. Oversee contribution processing, donor statements, and reconciliation of giving systems. Ensure proper tracking and reporting of designated and restricted funds while protecting donor confidentiality. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field required Seven or more years of progressive accounting experience CPA or CMA designation preferred Experience in a church or nonprofit organization strongly preferred Familiarity with church management and accounting systems (e.g., MinistryPlatform, Sage Intacct) preferred Bent Tree member or willing to become one is strongly preferred OTHER REQUIREMENTS
