
Overview
This is skilled work in a lead position for maintenance, repair, and installation of electrical fixtures, equipment, and systems.
Responsibilities
Troubleshoots a variety of electrical equipment/system problems to identify the nature and extent of the maintenance/repair need, determine the type of repair or preventive measure, identify potential safety issues, and locate faults in the system.
Serves lighting equipment, motorized electrical units, generators, transformers, and related circuitry; applies electrical trade skills to a variety of installations, office equipment, and structural wiring.
Receives assignments in the form of wiring diagrams, blueprints, or equipment service manuals; may supervise one or more maintenance workers.
Under general supervision, performs journey level electrician work maintaining all City-owned assets.
Obtains materials, supplies, and equipment needed to complete assigned electrical projects/work orders following City procurement procedures.
Estimates/materials, supplies, equipment, and time needed to complete assigned electrical work orders/projects to facilitate scheduling and budgeting.
Performs routine electrical maintenance/repairs to keep facilities/equipment in operating condition and ensure a safe work environment and uninterrupted electrical service.
Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on electrical equipment/services to identify potential problems and extend useful life.
Interacts with the public and/or other staff to answer questions or identify service needs.
Executes purchase orders as authorized by the department director; this position does not have final procurement authority.
Performs related work as directed or required.
Qualifications
Knowledge of established safety procedures for skilled electrical construction, maintenance, and repair work.
Knowledge of materials appropriate for skilled electrical work.
Knowledge of electric system troubleshooting procedures and techniques.
Knowledge of electric circuit/load principles and the National Electric Code.
Knowledge of tools and equipment used for a variety of skilled electrical work.
Ability to read, understand, and follow blueprints/schematic drawings; troubleshoot electrical problems.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to determine tools/equipment and materials needed for projects.
Physical ability to climb ladders and to bend, stoop, twist, and reach; lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Ability to analyze problems and identify possible solutions; perform basic mathematical calculations.
Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work activities; estimate time to complete projects.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, department officials, and the public.
Knowledge of operating and maintenance procedures for generating equipment, motors, and related equipment.
Knowledge of safety procedures for storing/disposing of hazardous materials.
Ability to read, understand, and follow technical codes and guidelines related to skilled electrical projects.
Desirable Experience and Training DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING : High School graduate with a minimum of 5 to 8 years of experience in the electrical field. Master Electrician license preferred, Journeyman license required.
Necessary Special Requirement Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License.
This is a designated "Response" classification in the City's Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies. Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
