Job Description The Assistant Director for Staff Recruitment supports the Residential Experience unit by leading recruitment initiatives for Residence Directors, Graduate Residence Directors, and Resident Assistants. This role supervises full-time professional staff and indirectly supervises graduate and student employees. The Assistant Director oversees all aspects of staff recruitment and is responsible for managing, planning, and coordinating the hiring processes for professional, graduate, and student staff. This includes initial screening interviews, on-campus interview experiences, collaboration with the Student Affairs Higher Education (SAHE) program for graduate candidates, and the execution of large-scale interview events for Resident Assistant hiring. As a member of the Residential Experience leadership team, the Assistant Director directly supervises Residence Directors and the Coordinator for Student Staffing and indirectly supervises graduate and student employees. This position reports to an Associate Director for Residential Experience.
Job Duties Supervision
Supervise and provide leadership for full-time Residence Directors, and one Staffing Coordinator, and indirectly supervise Graduate Residence Directors and Resident Assistants.
Provide ongoing direction and feedback about performance with supervisees.
Evaluate performance, including conducting performance evaluations effectively and efficiently and attending to their professional development.
Assist in the recruitment and hiring of direct reports, including reviewing applicant materials, conducting candidate interviews, and offering recommendations for hiring.
Develop competencies in other functional areas within Residential Experience ensuring effective guidance for supervisees.
Professional and Student Staff Recruitment
Oversee the recruitment, selection, and onboarding process for all professional, graduate, and student level positions.
Maintain records of application, performance history, and roster for all Resident Assistant staff.
Manage and respond to internal and external emails through the RA Selection email account in a timely manner, keeping confidentiality as needed.
Conduct administrative checks and maintain records of the following: background checks, student conduct checks, and GPA checks for all Resident Assistants.
Participate in virtual and in-person recruitment events to interview and assess potential candidates. In-person recruitment events require travel to those sites.
Establish and maintain professional relationships with departmental and university partners throughout the year to ensure the department stays in compliance with the various training requirements.
On-Call Responsibility & Student Support
Participate in 24-hour on-call rotation supporting live-in professional staff colleagues; recognize that residence halls are open 365 days a year and therefore being on-call during holidays should be expected; respond to student and/or facilities issues or crises as a third-tier responder and in person as needed 24-hours a day; high level of in-person response to mental health concerns, other student support situations should be expected.
Consistent communication with senior leadership during crises or emergencies; maintain accurate incident reports using Maxient software.
Work with Residential Life and Student Success teams to respond to critical incidents on campus; work with other departments to provide an appropriate response to crises.
Develop and maintain rapport with residents through regular student contact; attend supervisee building staff meetings as needed; assess needs and concerns of residents; advocate for students in all aspects of their housing and educational experience.
Identify personal and emotional concerns of students; provide appropriate resources and referrals; track and monitor student issues using Maxient database; maintain contact with parents and other constituencies as appropriate.
Unit Leadership
Serve on the Residential Experience leadership team, managing and coordinating unit initiatives in support of departmental and divisional priorities.
Collaborate with other Assistant and Associate Directors in Residential Experience to deliver consistent experience across all Residence Directors and communities.
Monitor budgets associated with the functional area of oversight and the residential area of supervision.
Represent the Department, the Division, and the University to students, families, alumni, and other stakeholders.
