Overview Under immediate supervision, is responsible for professional recreation work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required. An employee in this class routinely schedules, plans, and directs recreational programs at institutions or parks. This class differs from Recreation Specialist 2 in that an incumbent of the latter is responsible for performing work of greater complexity and is often assigned as the chief recreator at a correctional institution.

Qualifications Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in recreation or a related field.

Substitution of Experience for Education:

Qualifying full-time professional or paraprofessional experience in recreation or full-time work as a Recreation Assistant at a State Institution or Facility may be substituted for the required education, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of four years.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

A valid vehicle operator's license may be required for employment in some positions.

Responsibilities

Schedules daily and weekly unit activities and staff work schedules for recreation programs. Coordinates with other staff to ensure the resources and facilities are available to schedule daily recreational activities.

Checks all recreation supplies, equipment, and facilities for serviceability and safety as required by policy and procedures. Monitors the number of users involved in daily activities to ensure adequate equipment, supplies, and coverage for planned activities.

Communicates effectively with others to resolve conflicts and follows procedures to report and resolve unresolved conflicts. Communicates with other staff and supervisors concerning events, activities, and polices to promote effective completion of work tasks.

Explains the requirements and standards for recreational activities to staff under their supervision.

Promotes team building and cooperation with team members to promote an effective and productive work environment. Recommends changes in processes for recreational work to improve unit performance.

Maintain files and reports for daily operations.

Attends annual and special training to improve job proficiency and performance.

Provides guidance and coaching to assigned staff. Mentors or assists in training new and current staff.
