The Director of Operations is responsible for the overall operational oversight, coordination, and performance of a Joint Commission-accredited mental health and substance abuse treatment facility providing IOP, PHP, and Residential services. This role ensures that daily operations support safe, compliant, and effective patient care while meeting

Joint Commission standards ,

Tennessee Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services (TDMHSAS)

requirements, and organizational policies. The Director of Operations partners closely with Clinical Leadership to support quality outcomes, efficiency, regulatory compliance, and organizational growth.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

Provide oversight of day-to-day operations across IOP, PHP, and Residential levels of care. Ensure operational processes support safe, effective, and patient-centered care. Develop, implement, and enforce operational policies and procedures consistent with Joint Commission and TDMHSAS standards. Serve as operational liaison between clinical, medical, administrative, and support departments. Regulatory Compliance & Accreditation

Ensure continuous compliance with

Joint Commission accreditation standards ,

TDMHSAS licensing regulations , HIPAA, OSHA, and other applicable laws. Coordinate and support Joint Commission surveys, state inspections, audits, and corrective action plans. Monitor documentation, logs, staffing ratios, safety checks, and operational workflows for compliance. Quality Improvement & Risk Management

Participate in Performance Improvement (PI) initiatives, risk management activities, and incident reporting processes. Analyze operational data and trends to identify opportunities for improvement. Implement corrective actions related to safety events, grievances, or compliance findings. Staff Oversight & Development

Supervise, train, and evaluate operational and support staff. Ensure appropriate staffing coverage, scheduling, and onboarding processes. Collaborate with HR on recruitment, discipline, coaching, and performance management. Facilities & Environment of Care

Oversee facility operations including safety, maintenance, transportation, and housing operations (if applicable). Ensure compliance with Environment of Care (EC), Life Safety (LS), and Emergency Management (EM) standards. Coordinate vendor relationships, service contracts, and facility needs. Financial & Administrative Support

Support budgeting, cost controls, purchasing, and expense oversight in coordination with finance leadership. Monitor operational expenses and identify opportunities for efficiency. Assist leadership with operational forecasting and program expansion initiatives. Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Public Health, or related field required. Master's degree preferred. Experience:

Minimum

5 years

of operational leadership experience in healthcare, behavioral health, or substance abuse treatment. Experience managing

IOP, PHP, and/or Residential

programs strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience with Joint Commission and state regulatory compliance. Skills & Knowledge:

Strong knowledge of

Joint Commission standards ,

TDMHSAS requirements , and healthcare operational best practices. Proven leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities. Proficiency with EMR systems, scheduling tools, and Microsoft Office. Licensure / Certifications (Required or Preferred)

Required:

None specifically required for the Director of Operations role in Tennessee. Preferred / Recommended:

Healthcare compliance or management certification (e.g.,

FACHE ,

CPHQ ,

Lean Healthcare , or similar). CPR/First Aid certification. Valid driver's license (if overseeing transportation or housing operations). Physical Requirements

Ability to move throughout facilities and housing locations as needed. Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally. Working Conditions

Office and facility-based environment. May require evening or weekend availability for operational needs, emergencies, or surveys. Exposure to behavioral health populations.
