The Department of Periodontology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry invites applications for a full-time position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to serve as Director of Advanced Education in Periodontology. The UAB School of Dentistry is a leading oral health education and research institution with a focus on clinical and scholarly excellence. We seek an energetic team player who can advance the mission of the department in didactic and clinical teaching, research, service, and patient care.
Responsibilities
Oversight of the advanced education program in periodontology, including resident selection, onboarding, didactic and clinical education, delivery of patient care, and integration of care within the interdisciplinary structure for the UAB School of Dentistry.
Integration with external educational stakeholders and development of resident scholarly activity.
Provide departmental representation on school and university committees and contribute to curricular development and review of patient care.
Report to the Chair and participate as an integral member of the departmental leadership team.
Administrative duties including continuous assessment and improvement of the advanced education program and oversight of preparation for CODA accreditation.
Plan, implement, and responsibly manage clinical operations with sound fiscal practices.
Review teaching faculty within the Advanced Education Program on an annual basis and provide summative assessments and development; review residents biannually with regular formative feedback.
Prepare residents for competency in all CODA-required areas, and assist in preparation for ABP Qualifying and Oral Board examinations; develop programs to involve residents and/or dental students in research activities.
Coordinate recruitment of students/residents and provide letters of support for students when appropriate.
Investigate new and emerging patient care treatments and developments in dental practice equipment and techniques.
Collaborate with the Department Chair to identify and implement policies to increase clinic revenues while balancing academic requirements and business needs of the clinical enterprise.
Qualifications
DDS/DMD or equivalent degree and completion of a CODA-accredited Advanced Education Program in Periodontology.
Board certification in Periodontology.
Eligibility for licensure and/or a special teaching permit in Alabama.
Academic rank, salary, and tenure status commensurate with qualifications and experience; subject to review by the UAB SOD promotion and tenure committee.
Interest in and ability to contribute to teaching, clinical care, and scholarly activity within a leading academic dental center.
