A Day in the Life Role Overview The Senior Director, Enterprise Architecture is responsible for leading and maturing the Enterprise Architecture practice across the enterprise. This role provides strategic direction, governance, and architectural leadership to ensure technology investments are aligned with business strategy, enable innovation, reduce complexity, and deliver long-term enterprise value.

This leader owns enterprise-wide architecture vision, standards, governance, and current and future state roadmaps across business, application, data, integration, and technology domains. The role requires a seasoned architecture leader who operates as a trusted advisor to senior IT and business leadership, drives architectural discipline at scale, and influences outcomes across a complex, global organization.

This role also owns the Enterprise Business Architecture capability, including business capability models, value streams, and end-to-end process architectures. Business Architecture serves as a foundational input to enterprise strategy, investment decisions, transformation roadmaps, and landscape rationalization efforts.

In addition, this role is accountable for looking holistically across the enterprise to formulate and drive strategies for large-scale landscape rationalization and technical debt reduction, and for acting as a driving force toward the execution and realization of those strategies in partnership with IT and business leaders.

Reporting to the VP of Enterprise Architecture, Global Functions and SAP COE, this role establishes Enterprise Architecture as a strategic capability that enables speed, simplification, resilience, and disciplined transformation across the enterprise.

Key Responsibilities Enterprise Architecture Strategy and Vision

Define and drive the enterprise architecture vision, principles, and strategic direction aligned with business strategy and enterprise priorities

Own and maintain enterprise-wide current state and future state architecture roadmaps across business, application, data, integration, and technology layers

Collaborate with IT Value Stream leadership and Business Unit leadership to shape enterprise-wide transformation initiatives and ensure architectural coherence

Drive rationalization and simplification of enterprise platforms, processes, and capabilities to maximize the value of enterprise assets

Business Architecture Leadership

Own and mature the Enterprise Business Architecture discipline across the organization

Define and maintain enterprise business capability models, value streams, and end-to-end process architectures

Partner with business and IT leadership to align business strategy, operating models, and technology roadmaps

Use business architecture to guide portfolio prioritization, investment decisions, and transformation sequencing

Ensure business architecture informs enterprise landscape rationalization and technical debt reduction strategies

Establish business architecture standards, methods, and governance integrated with enterprise architecture practices

Enterprise Landscape Rationalization and Technical Debt Reduction

Establish a comprehensive enterprise-wide view of the application, data, integration, and technology landscape

Identify duplication, fragmentation, aging platforms, and sources of technical debt across the enterprise

Formulate multi-year strategies and roadmaps for application rationalization, platform consolidation, and technical debt reduction

Partner with IT and business leaders to embed rationalization and technical debt reduction into transformation programs, roadmaps, and investment planning

Act as a driving force to ensure rationalization and technical debt strategies translate into funded execution and realized outcomes

Track progress, measure benefits, and continuously refine strategies to ensure sustained enterprise impact

Architecture Standards, Governance, and Assurance

Develop, maintain, and evolve enterprise architecture standards, principles, reference architectures, and frameworks aligned with enterprise vision and strategy

Establish and operate an effective enterprise architecture governance model that balances agility and speed with architectural discipline

Provide architectural oversight and assurance for major programs, initiatives, and investments

Manage and mitigate architectural risks while ensuring adherence to security, privacy, and regulatory requirements

Cross-Enterprise Influence and Alignment

Collaborate across IT value streams, platforms, and business functions to drive adoption of common solutions, shared services, and reusable capabilities

Influence technology and investment decisions through architectural guidance, trade‑off analysis, and long‑term impact assessment

Act as a trusted advisor to senior IT and business leaders on enterprise-wide architecture, modernization, and transformation priorities

Enable alignment across decentralized teams while supporting effective local execution

Architecture Practice Leadership and Community

Build, lead, and mature the Enterprise Architecture practice as a high‑impact enterprise capability

Establish and grow an architecture community of practice that promotes consistency, collaboration, and continuous improvement

Define architecture roles, responsibilities, career paths, and capability expectations across the enterprise

Provide mentorship, coaching, and technical leadership to senior architects and the broader architecture community

Ensure the quality, consistency, and effectiveness of architectural deliverables across programs and domains

Technology Strategy and Innovation Enablement

Maintain deep awareness of modern enterprise platforms, architectural patterns, and emerging technologies

Evaluate and recommend technologies, tools, and methodologies that can enhance enterprise capabilities, drive Digital Transformation and performance

Ensure architectural decisions remain technology‑agnostic, value‑driven, and aligned to long‑term enterprise outcomes

Enable innovation by establishing clear architectural guardrails that accelerate delivery while maintaining integrity

Communication, Influence, and Change Leadership

Translate complex architectural concepts into clear, concise narratives for technical and non‑technical stakeholders

Articulate the value of enterprise architecture in terms of business outcomes, risk reduction, cost optimization, and sustainability

Drive adoption of architecture standards, business architecture models, and rationalization strategies through strong communication and influence

Navigate complex organizational dynamics and lead change across a broad range of stakeholders

Qualifications and Experience Required – Must Have

15 or more years with a Bachelor's degree of overall IT experience with a strong combination of application development, solution design, technical architecture, and enterprise architecture leadership or 13 or more years with a Graduate degree of overall IT experience with a strong combination of application development, solution design, technical architecture, and enterprise architecture leadership

Extensive experience leading enterprise architecture practices, including standards, governance, roadmaps, and architectural assurance

Demonstrated experience leading or establishing Business Architecture capabilities, including business capability modeling and value stream alignment

Preferred

Demonstrated experience formulating and driving large-scale landscape rationalization and technical debt reduction initiatives

Proven people leader with experience leading senior architects and leaders across multiple domains and geographies

Strong background in modern enterprise architectures spanning cloud, data, integration, security, and application platforms

Experience delivering large-scale transformation initiatives with clear execution and outcome realization

Demonstrated ability to remain technology- and vendor-agnostic while guiding enterprise-wide decisions

Strong relationship management skills with the ability to influence senior IT and business leaders

Outstanding communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate architectural direction and value

Organizationally savvy, with the ability to navigate complexity and drive consensus‑based outcomes

Experience operating in highly regulated industries

Experience with public cloud and hybrid enterprise architectures at scale

Familiarity with enterprise architecture frameworks, tools, and methodologies

Experience building and scaling architecture communities of practice

Track record of aligning architecture strategy to measurable business outcomes

Benefits & Compensation Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD): $206,400.00 - $309,600.00

This position is eligible for a short‑term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP). This position is eligible for an annual long‑term incentive plan. The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
