Director, Labor Relations

HMH Hospitals Corporation, Edison, New Jersey

Reporting to VP, TMLR & Employment Counsel, the Director, Labor Relations will develop, deliver, and maintain a business-focused labor relations strategy across the HMH network to maximize business results and maintain a productive work environment. The role leads a team of labor relations specialists responsible for advising on labor relations issues (disciplines, complaints, grievances, investigations) and proactive engagement activities (climate assessments, conflict and team dynamic resolution). The Director partners with management and local union leadership to sustain credible union relationships in support of business goals and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws, CBAs, HMH policies, Joint Commission, and other regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and administers Labor Relations programs by interpreting HMH policies, CBAs, and recommending corrective discipline and performance management.
  • Serves as subject matter expert for labor/management issues including union grievances. Leads collective bargaining negotiations, often serving as spokesperson. Directs 3rd party negotiators and advisors as needed. Manages grievance/arbitration processes.
  • Investigates and resolves employee or union complaints and grievances; coordinates internal response and grievance procedure. Includes recommendations for disciplinary actions and proactive activities (climate assessments, conflict and team dynamic resolution, etc.).
  • Partners with management and local union leadership to maintain, enhance, and optimize credible union relationships in support of business goals.
  • Partners with the VP, TMLR in budget development and management for assigned areas; regularly monitors relevant financial indicators and performance metrics, adjusting activities as needed.
  • Ensures compliance with federal/state laws, CBAs, HMH policies, Joint Commission, and other regulatory standards in assigned business units.
  • Advises supervisory personnel on employment issues related to discipline, FMLA, ADA, and discrimination.
  • Manages tracking of all CBAs throughout the network.
  • Provides general employment and labor guidance, risk mitigation, and case resolution support; collaborates with legal counsel on complex labor issues.
  • Designs and delivers training programs for managers, supervisors, and staff; may collaborate with the Organizational Education Department. Topics may include: employment law, dispute resolution and investigations, performance management, discrimination policies, labor relations, anti-harassment, and related areas.
  • Acts as spokesperson in all union matters including mediations/arbitrations if necessary.
  • Develops and implements plans for positive labor relations and manages responses to union organizing campaigns.
  • Oversees recruitment, development, and supervision of team members; fosters engagement and aligns objectives with departmental/organizational goals. Coaches and evaluates performance of direct reports.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum of 12 years of progressive HR experience with a focus on labor relations.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a direct management role.
  • Extensive labor relations experience, including negotiating contracts and union avoidance.
  • Strategic thinker with knowledge of best practices for a Labor Relations function.
  • Experience conducting formal investigations involving multiple levels of interaction with recommendations to senior leaders.
  • Excellent knowledge of state and federal employment laws.
  • Experience in conflict resolution methods, including facilitation and mediation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite).

Education, Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Preferred

  • Master's degree.
  • Concentration/certification in HR, ER/LR.
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft.

Licenses And Certifications Preferred

  • HR certification.

Compensation

Starting at $180,918.40 Annually

HMH is committed to pay equity and transparency for our team members. The posted rate of pay is a reasonable good faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act and does not reflect the full value of our market-competitive total rewards package.
