The Role As the Motion Systems Director, you will lead the Motion Systems Group within our Vehicle OS, a crucial part of the Human Interface Design team. Here, you will craft the experience of GM's in-cabin environment through motion, which serves as a tool for clarity, emotion, and brand identity. Your leadership will help establish a cohesive kinetic identity that future-proofs GM's digital offerings. In this role, you will oversee the full spectrum of motion language in GM's in-vehicle ecosystem, including interface animations, motion guidelines, and scalable systems. Collaboration is key; you will closely work with engineering, UX, Identity, and 3D teams to ensure cohesive motion that is both creative and technically sound. We seek a leader who views motion not just as an effect, but as an integral part of the design narrative. You will foster an open, collaborative culture that values exploration, refinement, and attention to detail. Your ability to coach and articulate the reasoning behind design choices will empower the entire team. Your Primary Focus Build and Curate the Motion Team:

Recruit, mentor, and cultivate a team of expert motion designers, instilling successful practices.

Motion Design:

Define the spatial flow and choreography of the interface to ensure purposeful movement across all brand interfaces.

UX Motion Strategy:

Own and articulate the UX motion strategy alongside your team.

What You'll Create Motion Design:

High-quality animations for product storytelling and vision.

Interface Animation + Art Direction:

Develop micro-interactions, transitions, gestures, and system behaviors.

Motion Guidelines:

Establish timing, easing, behavior, and system dynamics rules.

Motion Principles:

Create a conceptual foundation for motion behavior across GM brands.

Motion Systems:

Develop scalable, reusable motion structures across all platforms.

Motion Library:

Create documented, exportable solutions across brand and platform feature sets.

Support for Video Creation:

Provide motion overlays and animation sequences for marketing and storytelling.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) 10+ years of professional experience in Motion Design and/or UX Design.

A portfolio showcasing your ability to convey stories through visual craft, with skills in both creation and leadership.

Self-starter with independence; you tackle challenges decisively and share insights proactively.

Deep understanding of human interface design best practices.

You excel at rapid iteration, articulating design perspectives, and handling cross-functional feedback effectively.

Strong advocate for motion design; capable of presenting narratives that support your design choices with clear examples.

Passionate about design, brand development, and cars, having a deep appreciation for balance and restraint in design.

Comfortable navigating technical complexities, collaborating effectively with engineers and product managers.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) 3+ years of experience in a leadership capacity.

Experience with global motion executions and understanding of contextual differences.

Motion systems and guidelines created and successfully implemented.

Experience designing for non-traditional interfaces (e.g., automotive, voice, or wearable technology).
