Fun Boss
is the title for the Afloat Recreation Specialist (NAF Civilian position) aboard U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and large-deck amphibious assault ships. The primary purpose of this role is to plan, coordinate, organize, and direct a well-balanced afloat recreation program and leisure activities for crew members and embarked personnel worldwide. Duties
Develop a comprehensive Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program for up to 5,600 shipboard personnel. Plan, coordinate, organize, and direct well-balanced recreation and leisure activities for crew, family members, and embarked personnel. Deploy with the ship during underway periods. Co‑manage the ship's intramural and varsity level sports program with the Afloat Fitness Specialist. Administer ticket rebate and tickets sales program. Operate the ship's recreation equipment checkout program and gear locker. Organize and facilitate ship's recreation social activities. Instruct recreation leisure skills courses. Advertise and promote ship's afloat recreation program activities using various resources. Assist in planning and organizing Command‑level programs, such as family summer picnics or holiday parties. Coordinate port visits, gather information on ports of call, conduct port briefs, plan and implement ashore trips and tours, and travel with the advanced detachment when approved. Assist with drafting the financial plan/annual budget and executing it. Keep the Commanding Officer informed of the status of the afloat recreation fund and program. Provide guidance in the unauthorized expenditure of the ship's Non‑Appropriated Fund (NAF) afloat recreation funds. Assist in processing financial reports, summaries, data collection, and filing. Instruct and motivate military personnel and volunteers on proper operating procedures and policies. Review and inspect work assignments given to military or volunteers within the recreation division. Direct designated military personnel and volunteers with tasks in support of the afloat recreation program when authorized. Communicate through various formats, including memorandums, executive summaries, slide presentations, briefs, and e‑mails to correspond with CNIC HQ, ship’s command, and crew. Perform other related duties as assigned. Requirements
Must pass all applicable records and background checks. Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance. Must successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check. Must complete a physical examination upon entry to duty to be deemed physically fit for shipboard duty. Must be willing to deploy at sea on U.S. Navy ships; deployment lengths vary from a few days to over 10 months. The incumbent will receive 40% sea pay when underway/out to sea. Must be willing to relocate to reside within a 50‑mile radius of San Diego, CA. Qualifications
A four‑year degree or higher in Recreation, Physical Education, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience as outlined below. Knowledge of recreation principles, budgeting, internal controls, cash management, fiscal oversight, and inventory systems. Skill in planning and carrying out enhanced recreation programs that meet the needs of eligible patrons. Skill in common computer applications such as Microsoft Office (Word, e‑mail, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, calendars). Skill in marketing and promoting sports, recreation, and leisure activities. Ability to deploy with the ship during underway periods. Ability to conduct recreation programs and leisure activities. Ability to direct sporting activities. Ability to develop and effectively deliver presentations and/or training. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Education
Option 1: A four‑year degree or higher with a major in Recreation, Physical Education, or a related field. Option 2: An equivalent combination of at least three years of education toward a major in Recreation or related field and at least two years of specialized experience developing comprehensive recreation and leisure programs. Option 3: At least three years of specialized experience developing comprehensive recreation and leisure programs. Additional Information
Position requires periodic deployment aboard a U.S. Navy ship. 40% sea pay incentive is paid when underway/out to sea. Routine medical and dental care while underway may not be available. Pre‑employment physical examination and/or overseas medical screening required. Required vaccinations may be mandated per DoD requirements. At sea, the employee may share a stateroom with a junior officer; meals are obtained either by joining the Officers' Mess as a paying member or by purchasing meals on the Enlisted Mess Decks. Must maintain a valid U.S. Tourist Passport and apply for a U.S. No‑Fee Passport upon employment. Must obtain and maintain security clearances; employment is subject to ANACI and must be eligible for a secret clearance. Must complete the CNIC Afloat Recreation Program Management Course within 90 days of hire. Certification in first aid and CPR is required within 90 days of hire and must be maintained throughout employment. This position is not telework eligible. General Information
Salary is dependent on experience and/or education and includes locality pay. Some positions have special requirements, such as a one (1) year probationary period. Participation in Direct Deposit/Electronic Fund Transfer within the first 30 days of employment is required. For positions requiring travel more than twice per year, a Government‑issued Travel Card may be required.
