Description GAI Consultants is seeking a Lead Designer for Substation Physical Design that will perform physical design related tasks, provide technical guidance and training to CAD/design staff, and perform design reviews as required. The successful candidate will work on various substation engineering projects, including detailed design for high voltage substation projects from 12kV through 500kV.

Responsibilities

Manage design activities and perform technical checks for drawings, one-lines, physical arrangements, grounding, conduit, lighting, lightning protection, and bus analysis.

Create physical layouts and substation designs that integrate with protection and control drawings.

Develop project criteria and design specifications, including bill of materials.

Design and size auxiliary systems such as AC/DC load centers, batteries, and chargers.

Design and size conduit and high‑voltage conductor.

Order long‑lead item materials.

Perform QA/QC reviews on drawing packages for adherence to client standards.

Document QA/QC reviews, maintain record documents, and communicate information to the team.

Develop and deliver trainings associated with substation physical design.

Provide leadership, coaching, onboarding, and mentoring to subordinate team members.

Act as lead or first‑level supervisor when required.

Travel to other offices and meet clients as needed; attend project‑specific meetings on a regular basis.

Manage tasks on multiple projects in accordance with GAI’s high standards of project management.

Assist with scope of services and cost estimates for substation and P&C projects.

Use sound engineering and financial judgment to determine optimal solutions and manage competing priorities.

Adapt to shifting deadlines and scope changes while mitigating project barriers.

Work extended hours or after hours when required.

Proficient in AutoCAD and/or Microstation; experience with 3D CAD software (Inventor, P4I, etc.) is preferred.

Physical Requirements

Work indoors in professional office settings.

Sit for extended periods while performing computer‑based tasks.

Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, writing, and handling office equipment.

Visual acuity to read printed materials, digital screens, and detailed documents.

Occasional standing, walking, bending, or reaching within the office environment; ability to attend in‑person meetings.

Lift and carry office materials or equipment weighing up to 10–20 pounds.

Participate in conversations, phone calls, and virtual meetings with adequate hearing.

Travel for meetings, training, or business purposes.

Education

Associate Degree from an accredited technical school or equivalent experience.

Experience

10+ years of experience in substation or high‑voltage design, including detailed CAD work.

Licenses & Certifications

Valid driver’s license.
