
Overview
WGN Radio is seeking a News Producer to work in partnership with WGN-TV, NewsNation, and our Nexstar TV affiliate markets to produce audio news stories and audio newscasts for WGN Radio and other stations.
This role produces daily newscast items, decides the order in which stories will be told, writes teases and other content, times news programs, edits video, and posts video to the website.
Responsibilities
Aggressively seek out and present news stories and other content for all platforms.
Make sure the newscasts and news reports follow WGN/Nexstar/NewsNation guidelines and standards.
Write and deliver news stories in a clear and concise manner.
Assist in writing, editing, researching and coordinating news programming and other content.
Act as a reporter as assigned.
Anchor newscasts as needed.
Conduct interviews with newsmakers and reporters.
Manage and coordinate available live feeds.
Communicate to news and programming staff about developing and breaking news.
Write content for the website and other eMedia platforms.
Establish and build relationships with affiliate markets.
Be involved in daily editorial meetings.
Requirements & Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
Must have experience writing for broadcast news.
Fluent in English.
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Excellent news judgment with an expansive knowledge of local and national current events, history, newsmakers and issues.
Detail oriented and organized.
Able to recognize slant/bias and keep it out of newscasts.
Able to accept feedback, frequent reviews of writing.
Work well with a team inside a 24-hour newsroom (not a remote position).
Understand listeners’ and stations’ needs and expectations.
Meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Flexibility to work any shift including early mornings, weekends, overnights.
Pay and Benefits Pay Range: $20 - $30 dollars per hour
Benefits: Our benefits package for part-time non-union employees includes a 401(k) with company matching contributions, and any leave/sick options required per state.
