Part-time Recreation Leader II/III
The City of Gilroy is hiring for a part-time Recreation Leader II/III position in the Recreation Division
Youth & Community Services. The role offers flexible work hours, typically Tuesday through Saturday evenings, not to exceed 25 hours per week. The salary for Level II is $17.65/hour, while Level III ranges from $18.77 to $22.10/hour. The Recreation Leader II/III position involves planning, leading, and assisting with recreational, social, and enrichment activities across various program areas. Assignments may include facilitating programming for community-based programs, youth programs, community events, senior and intergenerational programs, and front-line customer service at the Recreation Office. The ideal candidate will have experience working with youth, seniors, and/or the public in recreation, community, education, or customer service settings. They should demonstrate emotional intelligence, remain calm and professional in various situations, and bring enthusiasm to assigned programs every day. Fluency in both English and Spanish is preferred, but not required. Strong interpersonal skills, reliability, punctuality, and the ability to independently manage time are essential. The candidate should also be comfortable working in both active recreation settings and office environments. Key responsibilities include planning, leading, and assisting with a variety of recreation programs and activities; ensuring program areas are clean, safe, and equipment is used properly; attending staff meetings and participating in training sessions; providing administrative and clerical support related to program operations; administering basic first aid when needed; operating a City vehicle as assigned; processing program registrations and facility reservations; and supporting additional program needs, including issuing and collecting equipment, setting up and breaking down for activities, leading basic instruction in arts, crafts, sports, and recreation, and recording participation and attendance. Qualifications for Recreation Leader II include: sixteen (16) years of age or older at date of hire, one year of paid experience working in a recreation program-type setting, experience supervising children, teens, adults, and/or seniors preferred, and experience communicating with parents and the general public preferred. Qualifications for Recreation Leader III include: high school diploma or equivalent, two years of paid experience working in a recreation program-type setting, must have experience supervising children, teens, adults, and/or seniors, and must have experience communicating with parents and the general public. Additional requirements for all levels include: valid tuberculosis (TB) Certificate, may be required to possess and maintain a valid California Driver License along with a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicles, possess and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR/AED certification within 12 months of hire, pass a pre-employment drug test, pass an employment background check including a Department of Justice criminal record check, prefer non-tobacco user, and bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
