Associate Editor — full-time, exempt. PERC is hiring to support and strengthen the organization’s growing publications program. As PERC’s portfolio of policy reports, issue briefs, op-eds, and digital content expands in volume, complexity, and visibility, this role will help maintain editorial excellence, improve workflow efficiency, and ensure timely, high-impact publications. This is an opportunity for a growth-minded individual seeking greater involvement and broader editorial responsibilities over time. The Associate Editor will provide hands-on editorial and writing support across PERC’s outputs and will work closely with researchers, policy analysts, and communications staff. The position reports to PERC’s Managing Editor as part of the research and publications team. Primary Responsibilities

Editorial Support & Quality Control (40%)

Edit and proofread a wide range of PERC publications for clarity, structure, consistency, tone, and style. Support copyediting, fact-checking, and formatting across research and policy reports, issue briefs, communications products, and popular press outputs. Ensure published materials meet PERC’s editorial standards and brand voice. Publication Planning & Workflow Management (30%)

Support publication planning, workflow coordination, and deadline tracking across teams. Assist in managing publication calendars and coordinating review processes. Help reduce bottlenecks and improve efficiency throughout the publication lifecycle. Collaboration & Accessibility (20%)

Work closely with contributors to improve accessibility, audience fit, and overall effectiveness of written products. Assist researchers and policy staff in translating technical or academic work into clear, high-impact content for broader audiences. Contribute original copy as needed, including summaries, landing pages, and digital adaptations. Process Development & Documentation (10%)

Help document, refine, and maintain editorial workflows, style standards, and best practices. Contribute to ongoing improvements in PERC’s publications processes as output continues to grow. Qualifications

Required Qualifications

2–5 years of experience in editing, journalism, policy, or nonprofit publishing. Demonstrated excellence in editing and writing, with strong attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines. Strong organizational skills and a process-oriented mindset. Interest in market-based approaches to conservation and natural resource policy. Ability to work collaboratively with researchers, policy analysts, and communications staff. Self-motivated and comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Preferred Qualifications

Experience editing policy, research, or analytical publications. Familiarity with topics related to conservation, environmental policy, or natural resource economics and management. Experience contributing to publication planning or managing editorial workflows. Interest in growing into a more senior editorial role over time. Location, Travel & Working Conditions

Location: Full-time, exempt position with preference for based in Bozeman, Montana. We will consider outstanding candidates based elsewhere in the United States who can work virtually. Travel requirements: Some regular travel by car and airplane is required. Working conditions: Business office environment with moderate noise. Will sit or stand at a desk.
