
Job Summary
The Technical Writer will work a hybrid schedule in Lansing, Michigan. Local candidates only (must already be located within 75 miles of Lansing, MI). You must be available for an onsite interview in Lansing and will need to be onsite twice a week, including the first day for equipment pickup and orientation.
We are seeking a Technical Writer to support initiatives to review and update documents and web‑published content for ADA WCAG 2.1AA compliance. The role will work with management to establish best practices for compliance efforts, train program staff, and lead the completion of needed updates. The position will meet weekly with the manager to track progress, remove any barriers, and set priorities, working closely with the department’s web administrator, web team, forms analyst, and review team to ensure timely compliance.
Responsibilities
Develop, enhance, and maintain user documentation for multiple applications, including online source documentation and documentation libraries. Identify, create, revise, and maintain documentation and templates while ensuring consistent terminology across all written materials.
Compose technical documents, manuals, bulletins, brochures, publications, training manuals, and special reports. Review and edit prepared material and illustrations, working with staff to develop formats, graphics, and layout for publications.
Oversee the writing, editing, publishing, and distribution of specification documents, preparing analyses or summaries, and training others. Demonstrate experience in technical writing, journalism, or communications work, with knowledge of planning, organizing, and writing various types of materials and research methodology.
Qualifications
4+ years of general technical writer experience.
1+ year of experience mentoring and working with teams to implement documentation standards, including the development and delivery of related training materials.
2+ years of experience reviewing existing documentation against standards, documenting and prioritizing identified gaps.
1+ year of experience working with work products and projects with a purposeful ADA WCAG 2.1AA focus.
1+ year of experience working with ADA tools associated with technical writing (e.g. Microsoft Accessibility Checker, Adobe Accessibility Checker, etc.).
