The Role
RAPS seeks a Director, Business Development & Sales to serve as a strategic revenue leader within the organization. This highly visible role is responsible for driving business development strategy across the association’s full portfolio of products and programs, including enterprise membership, events, exhibits, sponsorships, advertising, credentialing, career resources, and professional development offerings.
This position leads and manages a global business development and sales team, cultivates long-term client relationships, identifies new market opportunities, and ensures alignment between business development, marketing, operations, and finance to maximize organizational revenue and engagement. The Director also manages a targeted portfolio of high-value strategic accounts within the medical device and pharmaceutical sectors and plays a key role in shaping how RAPS brings value to corporate partners.
What will you do with us?
- Oversee and execute RAPS’ organization-wide business development strategy.
- Cultivate long-term relationships with existing and prospective clients to increase retention and lifetime value.
- Develop strategies for prospecting, lead generation, qualification, proposals, and presentations.
- Set budgets, quotas, and performance metrics for the business development team and monitor progress toward goals.
- Direct internal and external sales efforts to grow revenue across membership, advertising, sponsorships, exhibits, career resources, and professional development programs.
- Build, lead, and motivate a cohesive global business development and sales team.
- Manage business development processes, reporting, and customer intelligence to support data-driven decision-making.
- Identify and evaluate new business opportunities, markets, products, and delivery approaches in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Oversee pricing analysis and make recommendations to the pricing committee as part of the annual planning process.
- Establish standards and parameters for negotiation and contract finalization.
- Serve as the primary liaison to the Exhibitor Advisory Group for major events.
- Provide strategic input into marketing campaigns and collateral to support revenue growth.
- Manage outside vendors supporting business development initiatives.
- Travel to industry events, customer meetings, and RAPS programs domestically and internationally as needed.
What you will bring to succeed:
- Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or master’s degree preferred.
- 10+ years of strategic sales management and business development experience, preferably within a professional association or nonprofit environment.
- Demonstrated success leading revenue-generating teams and achieving sales quotas.
- Strong relationship-building and partnership development skills.
- Superior strategic thinking, financial acumen, and analytical ability.
- Exceptional negotiation skills and sound judgment.
- Client-focused, service-oriented approach to business development.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong project management, budget management, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience managing remote sales/business development teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with Salesforce and Impexium AMS preferred.
- Willingness and ability to travel, including potential international travel.
- Association/nonprofit and regulatory or health-science experience preferred.
What RAPS offers:
This position offers a total compensation range of $130,000-$160,000, which includes a base salary plus variable pay . The variable component is tied to individual performance and may include incentives, bonuses, or commissions. Actual compensation will depend on factors such as experience, skills, and role alignment.
