
About the Job:
The Banner seeks a Deputy Editor to serve as the newsroom's second-in-command and a key manager of our journalistic, cultural and operational success. The Deputy Editor will help lead news-reporting desks for one of the nation's most exciting and ambitious nonprofit media organizations, ensuring that this Pulitzer-winning newsroom continues to produce impactful, sustainable and urgent news.
This editor knows a good story. Excellent news judgment and editing ability are a must. The Deputy Editor lives and breathes local news and believes that kind and effective management is a necessary ingredient for impactful journalism. The right candidate has a lifelong passion for fair and independent journalism that corrects wrongs, delights readers, and earns non-traditional news consumers. A desire to experiment and occasionally fail is a must. The Deputy Editor will play a central role in cementing The Banner as Maryland's No. 1 news source, ensuring that our daily journalism aligns with long-term audience goals. This position is designed for a experienced editor with the desire and potential to grow into executive leadership. The role reports to the Editor in Chief.
What You'll Do: Operationalize the strategic vision for covering news in one of America's most diverse and interesting cities by emphasizing impactful enterprise reporting, urgent breaking news and must-have service journalism Articulate coverage priorities and how they align with newsroom goals for growing audiences and producing journalism that matters to people in Maryland Initiate and organize long-range planning on critical topics with creativity and precision Ensure that employees are being managed with respect and kindness, and play a key role in helping to develop career pathways for successful employees Proactively develop future leaders, mentoring and coaching staff Help recruit, train and develop a diverse team of journalists Embrace and model a change-positive and business-savvy culture that puts excellent journalism and audience service at the forefront of what we produce Serve as the 2 to the editor in chief and occasionally represent The Banner at public events What You'll Bring:
15 years of experience managing and inspiring other journalists, particularly other editors Impeccable journalistic integrity, editorial judgement and text-editing skills Demonstrated track record overseeing and editing impactful investigative stories Modern understanding of digital journalism, including applicable metrics, off-platform strategies and audience-engagement techniques Ability to manage several projects concurrently and communicate across multiple divisions while keeping senior management informed of any potential issues Crystal clear communication skills, both oral and written An entrepreneurial and collaborative spirit with coworkers inside the newsroom, in other departments and external partners Experience quickly and clearly setting coverage priorities to respond to the news Demonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to every aspect of people management and news coverage Willingness to live in or relocate to Baltimore City, or the counties of Baltimore, Howard and Anne Arundel Salary Range : $190,000 - $230,000 Individual pay may vary from the target range and is determined by several factors including experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
