Overview
The Role:
The Tzotzil Translator will bridge communication gaps for individuals facing language barriers by providing essential translation services across various sectors, including Education, Legal, Medical, Environmental, and Social Services.
This position is integral to fulfilling the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of Cayuse.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide accurate translations for spoken interactions such as lectures, conversations, and meetings.
Utilize technology to transcribe spoken English in designated settings.
Read and translate original documents into the required languages.
Edit translated materials for clarity and accuracy.
Demonstrate cultural sensitivity to both the source and target languages during the translation process.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications - What We Are Looking For: High School diploma, BA Degree, or equivalent experience.
Certification from the Foreign Service Institute or similar accredited program.
Professional certification in Translation.
American Translators Association (ATA) Certification is preferred.
Solid experience working with State Department projects, including refugee services, FDA, Health & Human Services, Medical, Legal, and Housing Authorities.
Fluency in Tzotzil is mandatory.
Ability to pass a background check, with additional checks as required by projects and clients.
Demonstrated ability to translate with discretion and impartiality.
Strong proficiency in written communication.
Broad knowledge across various topics.
Compassionate social awareness for interpretation and interaction.
Cultural awareness when conducting translations in diverse regions.
Physical stamina to endure extended sessions of work.
Excellent problem-solving skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft and Adobe tools, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Acrobat.
Highly motivated with the capacity to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
Ability to build strong relationships, both individually and in a team setting.
Self-starter who can work independently as well as collaboratively.
Reports to:
Deputy Program Manager Working Conditions: Professional remote work environment.
Must be available on-call, with a 48-hour notice for potential assignments.
Ability to fulfill duties for extended periods, both physically and mentally.
Proficient use of a computer and office productivity tools, meeting the demands of the role.
Establish a productive and professional workspace at home.
Capable of sitting for extended periods while focused on a computer screen.
Willingness to work flexible hours, which may include holidays.
Travel for business or professional development may be required.
Ability to work outside of normal business hours as necessary.
