Our client is seeking a Director of Government Auditing to lead and oversee complex governmental audit engagements. This role is ideal for a seasoned CPA with deep experience in Audit & Assurance (A&A), governmental financial statements, and single audits. The Director will serve as a technical expert, engagement leader, and trusted advisor to government clients while mentoring audit staff and ensuring audit quality across the practice.
This position offers a unique seasonal workflow : full-time audit leadership during peak season (June–January), followed by a flexible off-season focused on maintaining required CPE credits for government auditing.
Requirements:
Audit Leadership & Technical Oversight
- Lead and manage financial statement audits for government entities from planning through completion.
- Oversee and review single audits, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.
- Ensure all engagements meet professional standards, regulatory requirements, and firm methodologies.
- Provide technical guidance on complex audit issues, governmental accounting standards, and A&A matters.
Client Relationship Management
- Serve as the primary point of contact for government clients.
- Build and maintain strong, long-term client relationships.
- Deliver clear, timely communication regarding audit progress, findings, and recommendations.
- Mentor, coach, and review the work of audit staff and senior auditors.
- Support staff development through training, feedback, and technical guidance.
- Collaborate with firm leadership to enhance audit processes, workflows, and quality controls.
Operational & Strategic Contribution
- Manage engagement timelines, budgets, and deliverables.
- Contribute to firm-wide initiatives related to audit quality, efficiency, and best practices.
- Utilize experience with audit software (preferred: CCH ProSystem fx Engagement) to support audit execution.
Qualifications/Must-Haves:
- Active CPA license (required)
- Experience supervising or mentoring audit staff.
- 6–8 years of recent experience in public accounting.
- Strong background in Audit & Assurance (A&A)
- Ability to work in a hybrid capacity in or near Oakland, MD.
- Demonstrated experience leading or reviewing governmental audits.
- Advanced knowledge of financial statement preparation and single audits.
- Proven ability to manage complex audit engagements and client relationships.
- All education levels will be considered; equivalent practical experience is fully acceptable.
Seasonal Work Structure:
This is a full-time salaried role with a unique annual workflow:
- June–January (Peak Season): Full-time audit leadership, hybrid schedule with required onsite presence.
- February–May (Off-Season): No onsite requirement, focus on maintaining required CPE for government audits: 80 hours of A&A CPE every 2 years, includes 24 hours of government-specific training.
- All training costs are covered by the firm.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with CCH ProSystem fx Engagement.
- Familiarity with government-specific regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements.
