Real Estate Appraiser I (Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue) – performs a variety of professional residential real estate appraisals of low to moderate complexity for real property taxation purposes. Responsibilities

Perform professional work in the appraisal of homogeneous residential properties within assigned groups in accordance with Virginia Code and professional standards. Perform field inspections of single-family residential real property and ancillary structures to establish a basis for property valuations. Review assigned properties to ensure accurate up-to-date information in the County\'s mass appraisal system; review and analyze real property sales; ensure all construction permits are managed according to department standards and assessed accordingly. Provide customer service to property owners or representatives regarding the assessment process, valuation or other real estate assessment related issues. Defend assessed values at Board of Equalization hearings or other administrative hearings as assigned. Participate in professional training to remain informed of federal, state, and local tax laws and professional appraisal standards. Assist in managing valuation in a fast-paced work environment while ensuring local tax compliance and defending assessments when necessary. Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor\'s degree and at least one (1) year of real estate appraisal or assessment experience. Familiarity with Virginia\'s local tax structure and knowledge of appraisal practice and principles, with aptitude in mass appraisal; practical application of assessment ratio studies and statistical analysis. Basic understanding of concepts related to building construction, zoning codes and regulations. Knowledge of computer applications related to assessment (Microsoft Office, CAMA, Pictometry, Multiple Listing Services, GIS) and concepts related to real property appraisal and taxation including knowledge of real estate markets, trends, and transactions. Core skills: analytical and critical thinking, planning and organizing with good verbal and written communication skills. Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Successful candidate will undergo criminal background, credit, and DMV record checks. Must maintain a valid driver\'s license in Virginia or regional state of residence. Employees are prohibited from participating in any outside activity, including private appraisals, which may be deemed a conflict of interest by the Commissioner of the Revenue. All applicants seeking employment with the Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue are expected to comply with tax obligations. Failure to do so may impede consideration of your application. Ability to work in various outdoor weather conditions, traverse undeveloped land and tour construction sites. Occasional bending, stooping and light lifting may be required.
