The mission of the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology (OB/GYN) and Reproductive Sciences at UC San Diego School of Medicine delivers high-quality, equitable health care to its regional, national and global communities. We achieve this through innovative research, compassionate patient care and excellence in education and training. The department is home to nearly 80 faculty and more than 250 department staff members across eight divisions: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Hospitalist, Complex Family Planning, Minimally Invasive Gynecology Surgery and Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. In addition, the department offers residency program and 5 fellowships, training over 40 residents and fellows annually. The department is ranked 5th nationally in NIH research funding and 7th in obstetrics & gynecology hospital rankings. The department\'s blend of groundbreaking research, comprehensive clinical services, and robust training programs creates a dynamic environment where faculty, staff and trainees collaborate to advance women\'s health. The Communications Manager reports to the Administrative Vice Chair (adVC) and Department Chair. Working with limited technical supervision manages written, visual and digital communications for the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences (OB/GYN). The role combines content creation, editorial oversight, project management and strategic partnership across the School of Medicine and UC San Diego Health. Responsibilities
Strategic Communication & Engagement: Partner with the adVC, chair and senior department leaders to develop and execute a department-wide communications and engagement strategy. Design and implement information campaigns that promote research achievements and educational programs for a variety of audiences. Coordinate with the School of Medicine\'s director of communications and Office of Communications to highlight the department\'s work externally and identify collaboration opportunities. Content Creation & Editorial Management: Write and edit web copy, short news stories, newsletters, brochures, manuals, email campaigns, social media posts and other materials. Ensure content reflects inclusive language, adheres to editorial guidelines, maintains consistency. Conduct interviews to gather stories about education, research and departmental initiatives. Update the departmental website to improve navigation and usability. Digital Publication: Upgrade the department website for accuracy and accessibility; transform the department newsletter into an electronic publication; schedule, produce and distribute issues on time. Oversee creation of an annual department report and develop slide decks, fact sheets and marketing collateral for fundraising, grant reporting and outreach. Project Management: Manage multiple communications projects with timelines, deliverables, and status reports for senior leadership. Track KPIs and present results. Identify opportunities to improve communications and recommend process improvements. Program Oversight: Independently oversee a comprehensive communications program with written, visual, digital and electronic communications; collaborate to develop and execute branding and information campaigns. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Nine years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor\'s degree in related area plus five years of related experience/training.
Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues and appropriate applications.
Minimum of five years\' work experience creating and writing content for media channels; experience with posting multimedia content and tailoring messages for specific audiences, ideally for a university program or educational product.
Technical skills in web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and related capabilities.
Competency with software including Microsoft Office Suite, web CMS and social media tools; demonstrated innovation and keeping current with new technologies.
Experience cultivating sources for content creation and summarizing news articles for various media; ability to adapt content for multiple channels.
Ability to advise management to ensure delivery of the desired message to target audiences; experience creating content for executive leadership.
Strong written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen; ability to write and edit for accuracy and style; knowledge of English grammar and journalistic style; ability to write for executive leadership and diverse audiences.
Demonstrated excellence in news judgment and interviewing skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to multitask and complete projects quickly in a fast-paced environment.
Experience creating social media strategies for targeted audiences and providing sound media strategy in a campus environment.
Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
Ability to develop long and short term strategic communications plans and evaluate their effectiveness.
Knowledge of location protocols and communication channels, and current affairs in higher education and health sciences.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in a scientific/medical research environment.
Experience in academic higher education and/or medical school.
Knowledge of Adobe Cloud, MyEmma, and Canva.
Knowledge of UC San Diego and related organizational structures and campus locations.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Flexible schedule required.
Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
Hybrid schedule with a minimum of 1-2 days on site.

Pay Transparency
Annual Full Pay Range: $79,200 - $143,400 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $37.93 - $68.68 The Hiring Pay Scale may be broader than the pay actually offered, depending on experience, budget and other factors.
