Public Relations Description

Job Summary Plans, directs, monitors, and evaluates public relations strategies for the Area Command/Corps to help The Salvation Army maintain a favorable image in the communities and to internal and external audiences. Coordinates development and implementation of print and digital marketing collateral. Serves as liaison to all media, photographs and writes articles covering Salvation Army events, and strengthens communication with donors, prospective donors, corporations, volunteers, media personnel, civic club leadership, and local government leadership. Sets goals, monitors work, and evaluates results to meet organizational needs and objectives. Assists in fundraising for capital campaigns. Monitors, tracks, and participates in the day-to-day operation and maintenance of a donor database; prepares donor reports and assists fundraising staff with donor information and mass mailings. Essential Functions

Assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive annual marketing plan that supports and enhances the organization’s image with current donors, the general public, and internal audiences. The plan will have defined and measurable objectives. Develop and create a constant flow of written and visual content for distribution across all channels to support awareness, engagement, and fundraising. In cooperation with the Marketing team, act as primary local website manager. Create and maintain content for accuracy and relevancy. Ensure articulation of the organization’s desired image and position in all communications. Maintain brand standards in design and feel of print and electronic materials. Curate and participate in the organization’s social media properties in coordination with the overall marketing plan. Seek constituent engagement and community growth. Prepare regular reports to assess effectiveness of current projects and marketing efforts. Coordinate media interest in the organization, ensure regular contact with target media, and respond to media inquiries to secure frequent coverage. Share key messages and positioning; increase public awareness and perception of the organization. Be present at public events and capture stories, pictures, etc. of organizational staff. Create talking points and provide coaching to staff and volunteers as appropriate. In cooperation with the CRD Manager, develop an effective strategy to educate local groups (churches, schools, clubs, businesses) and secure their participation in volunteer service, bell-ringing, in-kind support, etc., year-round. Assist with speaker requests from these groups. Strengthen communication with donors, prospective donors, corporations, volunteers, media personnel, civic club leadership, and local government leadership; maintain open and direct channels of communication including written documentation showing a personalized plan for each donor; ensure donor satisfaction, timely response to questions, and accurate, complete information. Fundraising (15%)

Research prospective corporate and foundation funding sources. Attend pre-submission grant orientation seminars. Distribute formal correspondence, drafted by the Commanding Officer or Grant Writer, to grant makers including letters of inquiry, formal grant proposals, cover letters, thank you letters, and progress and program evaluation reports. Internal Leadership (15%)

Assist in creating and maintaining lines of communication to ensure all employees are aware of the organization’s services and successes. Empower staff to identify and relay stories of interest from day-to-day work. Attend and participate in Advisory Board/Committee meetings as appropriate. Assist in the United Way in-house campaign and agency representation. Administration (10%)

Attend and participate in assigned conferences and workshops. Participate in regularly scheduled Development meetings and training sessions as assigned. Prepare and maintain records of all phone calls, correspondence, and donor contacts; manage donor data and respond to donors and prospects by mail. Stay abreast of news, changing demographics, and other relevant issues to evaluate and adjust marketing and communication activities. Read industry publications and stay informed about changes and trends in the philanthropic and marketing sectors. Perform duties with an understanding of The Salvation Army’s mission and Christian principles; conduct all communications and duties professionally. Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of The Salvation Army mission and philosophy. Knowledge of Christian theology and The Salvation Army doctrine. Knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations. Knowledge of acceptable fund-raising methods and strategies. Knowledge of current and evolving trends in social media; skilled in maintaining social media profiles and communities. Knowledge of effective methods for organizing and maintaining records. Knowledge of grant administration and grant writing skills. Knowledge of Excel and MS Office software applications. Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Customer service oriented with a professional demeanor; ability to interact with a diverse group of constituents and staff. Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail. Ability to read and understand complex application documents. Ability to prepare and maintain reports accurately and on time. Ability to work independently with limited supervision. Ability to present a positive and professional image of The Salvation Army. Ability to maintain security of confidential records and information. Attention to detail and ability to ensure compliance with complex reporting requirements. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work to meet quality standards and deadlines. Ability to prepare effective printed materials for educational and promotional purposes. Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate in English. Ability to speak before large groups in person, by radio, and television. Ability to travel to various locations for public meetings, conferences, etc. Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, or a related field, and one to two years of experience performing marketing, public relations or fundraising through all forms of media with public speaking experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Duties are usually performed seated; standing or walking may be required at times. Limited physical effort required for walking, standing, lifting, and carrying light objects ( Work is performed in a normal office environment with little or no discomfort related to weather, noise, or dirt.
