The Communications Specialist plays a key role in advancing the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago’s mission by shaping clear, compelling, and consistent communications for internal and external audiences. This role is responsible for day-to-day media relations, internal communications, and copywriting across channels, helping to elevate the Y’s voice, strengthen alignment across the organization, and build trust with the communities we serve. Working closely with the Vice President of Marketing & Public Affairs and cross-functional partners, the Communications Specialist translates complex initiatives, programs, and issues into accessible, engaging content that reflects the YMCA’s values and brand. Pay is $52,500-$55,000 based on qualifications/experiences with opportunities to grow within the organization. Our staff is the Y’s greatest asset. Media Relations: Support and execute media relations strategies that elevate the YMCA’s visibility and reputation across the region. Draft press releases, media advisories, talking points, and statements. Manage incoming media inquiries and coordinate interviews with YMCA leadership and subject-matter experts. Maintain media lists and monitor news coverage related to the YMCA, community issues, and key partners. Assist with crisis and issues communications as needed, following established protocols. Internal Communications: Develop and distribute clear, timely internal communications for YMCA staff, leaders, and volunteers across multiple locations and program areas. Draft internal emails, memos, announcements, FAQs, and leadership messages. Support organizational initiatives by ensuring consistent messaging and tone across the Association. Collaborate with HR, Operations, and program teams to communicate policy updates, milestones, and organizational news. Copywriting & Content Development: Write and edit compelling copy for a variety of channels, including website content, emails, newsletters, social media, presentations, and marketing materials. Ensure all content aligns with YMCA brand standards, voice, and messaging frameworks (e.g., mission, values, and Y for Life positioning). Adapt content for different audiences, including members, families, donors, partners, media, and internal stakeholders. Proofread and edit content for clarity, accuracy, consistency, and tone. Collaboration & Support: Work closely with the broader Marketing & Public Affairs team to support campaigns, advocacy efforts, and major initiatives. Coordinate with program leaders and executive staff to gather information and develop accurate, engaging communications. Minimum and Preferred Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, or preferred Minimum three years of related work Strong writing skills and ability to self-edit Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to pivot seamlessly between strategy and execution Experience responding to media requests and interacting with members of the news media Exceptional understanding of social media platforms and analytics Proficient in Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel, Outlook) with the ability to learn new technology Ability to travel locally on a regular basis to multiple YMCA Hubs when needed Meet physical qualifications required as outlined in job description.
