Overview Job Description : The Executive Director, Enterprise Data Management is responsible for leading and expanding enterprise data management capabilities that support all functions—with an initial focus on R&D and Commercial. This role will drive the continued development and execution of the company’s enterprise data strategy, strengthen data governance, oversee data acquisition and master data management (MDM), scale data operations, and accelerate the delivery of data solutions that meet key business needs and support AI / analytics / reporting solutions.

The Executive Director leads several teams of data professionals, including an existing Commercial Data Management team, a new R&D Data Management team, and a new Enterprise Data Governance specialist. Depending on start date, this position may lead hiring for R&D Data Management and Enterprise Data Governance. This role will work a weekly hybrid schedule in our Waltham office. This role reports to the Vice President, Data, Analytics & Insights.

Responsibilities

Partner with leaders across R&D, Commercial, Enterprise AI, IT, Information Security, and Program Management to understand key business needs and existing data management capabilities. Deliver data solutions that enhance and augment existing capabilities to accelerate scientific, operational, and commercial decision-making and execution.

R&D data capabilities vary by sub-function. For example, Clinical has their own data management capabilities.

Commercial uses centralized capabilities provided by the existing Commercial Data Management team.

Continue the development of enterprise data management capabilities:

Data Strategy: Lead the continued development and execution of the enterprise data strategy, ensuring alignment with corporate, R&D, and Commercial goals. Define multi-year roadmaps and investment priorities.

Data Governance: Establish policies, standard operating procedures, stewardship models, standards, and decision rights across functions and platforms. Partner with Legal and IT to ensure record retention policies are clear and actionable.

Data Acquisition: Optimize sourcing, licensing, and integration of internal and external datasets across R&D and Commercial. Evaluate security and privacy risks in data acquisition and licensing, including vendor due diligence, data handling controls, and contract requirements.

MDM: Define and maintain enterprise product, study, asset, HCP/HCO, and other foundational data domains.

Data Operations & Optimization: Ensure data pipeline reliability, data quality, harmonization, and operational efficiency.

AI & Analytics Enablement: Partner with Enterprise AI and functional analytics teams to ensure AI solutions are supported by trusted, well-governed data. Use AI to enhance data management capabilities.

Serve as the primary enterprise representative for data governance initiatives and drive alignment on data standards, quality, and access models.

Promote a culture where data quality, security, and responsible use are consistently reinforced.

Partner with IT to ensure data platforms, models, ontologies, and metadata solutions support enterprise needs.

Partner with Information Security to ensure data platforms and pipelines follow secure architecture patterns, access controls, and regulatory requirements.

Partner with Strategic Sourcing, Legal, Finance, IT, and external vendors to secure data assets, negotiate contracts, and manage vendor performance.

Champion a culture of data excellence, trust, and innovation across the organization.

Qualifications Basic Qualifications, Education and Experience

Advanced degree in data management, information systems, data science, analytics, or related discipline.

Proven experience leading enterprise data management and data strategy functions within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry; R&D data management experience required; Commercial data management experience preferred.

Minimum of 10 years of experience in the pharma/biotech industry and at least 7 years in a senior data leadership role.

Experience overseeing data governance, data acquisition, MDM, and operational data management capabilities across multiple functions.

Proven experience with R&D and Commercial data assets, including scientific, clinical, operational, real-world, and master data.

Demonstrated experience hiring, developing, and leading high-performing multidisciplinary data teams.

Preferred Qualifications/Abilities

Ability to build strong, collaborative partnerships with senior leaders across R&D, Commercial, IT, Information Security, and Enterprise AI.

Ability to translate scientific and business requirements into actionable data strategies and scalable enterprise solutions.

Ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams and drive alignment across diverse stakeholder groups.

Ability to lead change management initiatives, including guiding teams and stakeholders through new processes, technologies, and operating models.

Strong focus on process improvement and the development of sustainable, predictable, and compliant data operations.

Strong project leadership, organization, and planning skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to manage vendor performance and communicate requirements effectively.

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $275,000 to $325,000. In addition, this position is eligible for an annual performance pay bonus.
