Job Responsibilities:
The Johns Hopkins Director of Engineering Environmental Regulations is responsible for ensuring the facility's engineering and power plant operations adhere to all federal, state, and local environmental laws and permits. This role is critical in the energy plant environment due to the industry's strict regulations regarding air emissions, fuel tanks, wastewater discharge, and storm water discharge. This position is responsible for identifying and developing mitigation plans for environmental risks.
Role Accountabilities Include: Manages all environmental permits (such as Clean Air Act Title V permits, Clean Water Act, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System/NPDES permits for wastewater, etc.). This includes preparation, renewal, and ensuring compliance with all permit conditions Administers environmental monitoring (air, water, and soil sampling/testing) program and analyzes data. Responsible for preparing and submitting detailed compliance reports to regulatory bodies such as the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Develops, implements, and manages specific environmental programs, such as: Outdoor air quality management and emissions reporting Stormwater management procedures Wastewater management procedures Aboveground and underground fuel storage tanks Collaborates with Johns Hopkins Environmental and Occupational Safety Department to development, implementation, and training of Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures (SPCC) plan Conducts routine environmental audits, inspections, and risk assessments across all facilities to identify non-compliance issues Maintains comprehensive records and documentation of all inspections, audit findings, and corrective actions for internal and external regulatory reviews Stays up-to-date on all evolving environmental laws and regulations and communicates these requirements to engineering and plant management and staff Conducts training sessions for engineering and plant personnel on environmental regulations and emergency response protocols Conducts risk assessments to evaluate potential environmental risks associated with new projects, construction, or operational changes
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred 10 years or more in environmental compliance management, preferably within the healthcare or a similarly highly-regulated industry.
