The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. In partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives, expediting demonstrations, expanding successful pilots, and supporting rapid implementation to meet public health needs.

About The Role :

Reporting to the Chief External Affairs Officer (CEAO), the Director of Foundation and Government Relations leads fundraising activities related to government entities, private foundations, and corporate foundations for FPHNYC. The goal is to provide sustained support for the DOHMH priority initiatives. The Director will expand the Fund’s institutional fundraising capacity, establish performance metrics, strengthen relationships with current and prospective funders, and supervise Institutional Giving staff and Corporate Relations staff. The Director will manage the grant-seeking process to support DOHMH fundraising priorities and track progress throughout the year, while providing guidance to DOHMH staff seeking private and public grant funding.

Responsibilities

Develop and execute fundraising plans with clearly defined outcomes, activities, and responsibilities to meet annual and multi-year revenue targets in line with FPHNYC’s strategic plan.

Collaborate with DOHMH program leadership to develop grant proposals and budgets.

Prepare DOHMH program leadership for funder meetings and site visits.

Identify, cultivate, and steward funding relationships with private foundations, federal, state and local government funders, and corporate foundations.

Supervise and develop the Senior Manager of Institutional Giving and Manager of Institutional Giving.

Lead collaboration with FPHNYC finance and program departments to align fundraising with other organizational activities.

Manage multiple complex grant applications and other funding solicitations, events, campaigns in various development stages.

Prepare funder briefings, talking points, presentations, and train staff for donor meetings, calls, and site visits.

Develop grant budgets in collaboration with DOH program teams and FPHNYC finance and program teams.

Ensure compliance with DOHMH Central Review Committee (CRC) and other funders, documenting funds raised by FPHNY in support of DOHMH initiatives.

Maintain a portfolio of funders and prospects and memorialize relationship history in Salesforce CRM.

Work with FPHNYC programs post-award and participate in regular meetings with DOHMH colleagues to ensure grant compliance.

Serve as an active member of the Director Leadership Team (DLT).

Collaborate with Communications Directors on public-facing news and updates about grants and progress of grants-funded programs.

Build and maintain relationships with DOHMH leadership, staff, and corporate/foundation program officers to develop winning proposals.

Represent the organization at events, conferences, and meetings to enhance visibility and expand network.

Lead, manage, and develop the institutional giving team with clear performance goals and feedback.

Foster a collaborative, inclusive work environment and support professional growth.

Conduct annual performance evaluations and provide ongoing training and feedback.

Stay informed of nonprofit fundraising trends and provide insights to inform strategy.

Assist in board presentations, donor meetings, and fundraising trainings.

Lead quarterly Development Contract invoicing and coordinate with FPHNYC Finance to submit on time.

Other duties as assigned by the CEAO and CEO.

Requirements

Minimum of 8 years progressive experience in fundraising and development with a proven track record of securing significant private and public grants.

Effective leadership and managerial capabilities, with political acumen.

Strategic thinker who can organize, manage, and evaluate multiple projects and resolve complex issues calmly.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex ideas into winning proposals.

Superior interpersonal skills to engage and inspire funders, community members, and stakeholders.

Highly skilled in proposal development for public and private sector funders.

Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative culture.

Strong customer service orientation, flexible and responsive.

High attention to detail and quality control.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Experience with fundraising software including Salesforce.

Knowledge of internal communications tools such as Teams and SharePoint.

Passionate about health equity for New Yorkers.

Willing to carry out additional duties to support department and organization goals.
