
Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer

Overview
Buena Vista University is seeking a Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer responsible for the overall management of athletic training room operations with oversight of sports medicine coverage for 21 varsity sports, including emerging sports of Women’s Wrestling and STUNT. Responsibilities include coordinating the care, prevention, and treatment of athletic injuries for student-athletes. Arrange for injury and illness treatment by team physicians and other medical personnel as necessary. Maintain complete, accurate, and detailed medical records and work with the secondary insurance company. Supervise three full-time associate/assistant athletic trainers, PT athletic trainers who assist on an occasional basis, and any student interns. Coordinate and schedule clinical assignments; practice, contest, and general athletic training room coverage. Sports assignments are flexible per the candidate’s preference. This is a full-time position with 8 weeks of agreed-upon time off. $6,000 signing bonus, moving expense stipend, and generous five-year retention bonus. NATA membership and state licensure expenses are covered and yearly funds for CEU’s is provided.
Primary Responsibilities
Coverage at athletic events – home and away (travel sports include football, soccer, basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball)
Injury prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation
Professional consultation
Supervise and coordinate the schedules/activities of assistant-certified athletic trainers, student athletic trainer-directed studies, and student athletic trainer internships
Supervise the athletic department health and safety programs
Coordinate NCAA drug testing program, athletic department bloodborne pathogen control, and Basic First Aid and CPR; maintain NATA certification and state licensure through CEUs; deliver various conditioning and educational programs to a varied population
Coordinate liability control activities: manage the athletic department insurance program, including the NCAA catastrophic coverage program; collaborate with the university risk-management team; maintain adequate and appropriate records and monitor drug and supply inventories; supervise the athlete’s physical exam data collection process
Manage operating and work-study budgets in conjunction with the Director of Athletics
Coordinate sports medicine support network including team physicians, physical therapists, dentists, orthopedic physicians, etc.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
BOC certification required and must be eligible to file for Iowa licensure
Must hold and maintain current CPR/First Aid/AED Certification
3 years of athletic training experience required; 5 years preferred
