The primary purpose of this Actuary position is to provide a range of decisions based on actuarial analysis and forecasting, to maximize profit and growth and provide guidance to more junior level actuaries. Develops complex actuarial formulations leading to the recommendation of extensive and impactful pricing strategies and loss reserving. Provide consultations and clarification on actuarial models and risk issues, and influence management toward a course of action that has a potential impact on underwriting, pricing, risk management, and profitability.

Job Responsibilities

Conduct research and analysis to evaluate potential new lines of business, establishing rates and pricing strategies that align with profitable premium growth and cost-based pricing. Investigate new business opportunities and identify potential acquisitions, providing data-driven insights and recommendations. Communicate findings to Actuarial, Finance, Claims, Underwriting, and Executive Leadership, presenting analyses clearly and responding to requests for alternative structures or assumptions to better represent the risks under review. Deliver presentations on actuarial analyses to diverse audiences, ensuring both actuarial and non-actuarial stakeholders understand results and their implications. Proactively identify and communicate potential actuarial issues to relevant teams. Mentor and serve as a resource for less experienced actuaries, fostering professional growth and knowledge sharing. Represent the Department on cross-functional teams. Support corporate goals and principles. Other actuarial work as needed.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in mathematics, statistics, or other analytical fields.

Certification

ACAS required for Actuary; will consider candidates actively taking exams for Senior Actuarial Analyst.

Work Experience / Skill Set

4+ years of actuarial experience preferred. Project management skills are required, especially related to deadlines, resource management, and meeting customer needs. Strong communication skills are required, as is the ability to think critically and defend actuarial assumptions, decisions and methodologies. Ability to balance creativity and sound actuarial judgement.

Pay information

Job level is commensurate with experience, specialized skills relevant to the role, and possession of the outlined preferred qualifications. Markel reserves the right to propose an alternative career level based on these factors. Base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors, such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary for the Senior Actuarial Analyst position is $78,000 - $107,250 with 15% bonus potential. The national average salary for the Actuary position is $116,080 - $159,610 with 25% bonus potential.
