Purpose The SOAR Benefits Specialist assists individuals with serious mental illness and other vulnerabilities in applying for federal disability benefits using the SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR) model. This role is client-focused and combines direct service, advocacy, and detailed documentation to help clients successfully navigate the disability benefits process.
Responsibilities
Direct Client Care
Engage individuals in need of services and identify potential SOAR candidates
Complete SSI/SSDI applications through in-depth client interviews and documentation
Gather and organize medical records and supporting evidence for applications
Write comprehensive SOAR Medical Summary Reports
Accompany clients to Social Security Administration (SSA) appointments as needed
Maintain communication with SSA regarding application status
Coordinate with medical providers, psychiatrists, and specialists to obtain required documentation
Refer and connect clients to community resources including housing, mental health, substance use, primary care, and transportation services
Documentation & Administrative Responsibilities
Maintain accurate and timely case records, progress notes, referrals, and assessments
Participate in required trainings, certifications, and weekly team meetings
Perform other duties as assigned to support program operations
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree
One (1) year of experience in the mental health field
Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or a related field
Two (2) years of experience in the mental health field
SOAR certification
Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge of mental health and substance use disorders and clinical approaches
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to build rapport and conduct effective interviews with a diverse population
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to collaborate with internal teams and external community partners
Familiarity with federal and state public benefits programs and/or SOAR is a plus
Ability to understand and comply with confidentiality laws, client rights, ethical standards, and abuse reporting requirements
Pay and Hours This is a full-time M-F position paying $22.00 per hour, with eligibility for the full benefits package.
