Overview
The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHS/EM), Branch of State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) is recruiting for an Emergency Management Specialist 2. This position is in the General Government (GGU) Bargaining Unit at a range 16. This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our Definition FAQ to determine if you qualify. What You Will Be Doing
The new DHS/EM team member will play a vital role in the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC), assisting with emergency warning, disaster response, incident management, and community outreach to enhance state preparedness and resilience during natural and man-made disasters. Responsibilities include conducting pre-emergency planning, supporting community engagement initiatives, and participating in programs focused on disaster preparedness, recovery, and mitigation, ensuring a coordinated and effective response to emergencies. The successful applicants must pass a federal background check for base access. A valid Alaska Driver’s License, proof of vehicle insurance, and Alaska vehicle registration may be required. Some positions require obtaining and maintaining a security clearance. Work may require periodic on-call duty and travel to remote locations by various transportation modes. You may be required to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC) as part of the examination process. Background checks may include criminal records; conviction does not automatically preclude appointment, depending on circumstances. Qualifications (examples)
One of the following qualifications or combination thereof: One year of entry professional level experience mitigating against, preparing for, responding to, or recovering from emergencies, disasters, or terrorist events. This experience may be met by service as an Emergency Management Specialist 1 with the State of Alaska or equivalent elsewhere. Two years of entry professional level experience creating contingency plans, conducting exercises, responding to events, or coordinating recovery from such events. A bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited college, and one year of entry professional level experience as described above. Special notes: A valid Alaska driver’s license is required. Some positions may require federal security clearance. Travel and strenuous duties may be required. Attending work is an essential function of the job. Additional Information
Other requirements: DMVA is housed on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. You may need to pass a security background check to obtain installation access. The incumbent must maintain the clearance. Work may involve travel within the state to remote locations and may include challenging conditions.
