Responsibilities (selected)

Performs investigative tasks, evaluates cases, collects and preserves evidence, interrogates suspects and questions witnesses. Enforces traffic and parking regulations; directs traffic; investigates traffic accidents and prepares reports. Determines when searches, seizures and arrests are warranted; may involve foot or vehicle pursuits. Performs judicial support activities including testifying in court and related duties. Assists in administrative and supervisory tasks, and public relations. Operates firearms per department rules; cleans and maintains firearms and vehicles. Patrols designated city areas by vehicle or on foot; completes special details and prepares reports. Writes reports and maintains daily logs; serves warrants and transports prisoners. Responds to citizen complaints and represents the department at public meetings on topics of interest. Knowledge and Skills Knowledge:

Law enforcement methods, crime prevention, and laws governing arrest, custody, search and seizure, and evidence. Skills:

Independent judgment in emergencies, safe operation of police vehicles, ability to follow instructions, communcation (verbal and written), and ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders. Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent Completion of a recognized police training academy or equivalent to be certified by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) Special Requirements Must be 21 years or older at time of employment Must have been employed as a full-time commissioned officer and completed a recognized training to become certified through WSCJTC Must possess or obtain a valid Washington State driver’s license Must read and write English Felony convictions and disqualifying criminal histories are not allowed Must pass a medical exam Selection Guidelines Formal application, review of education and experience; may include physical agility test and written exam; oral interview; background investigation and polygraph; medical and psychological examinations.
