One of the first urban conservation corps in the country, the San Jose Conservation Corps was founded in 1987 to meet the growing need for job training opportunities. San Jose City Council members and SJCC founders Susan Hammer and Shirley Lewis recognized the potential of the job training model of the original 1933 Civilian Conservation Corps and with strong support from the City of San Jose, SJCC began operations with over 20 corpsmembers in January 1988. Are you looking for an opportunity to level up your career while making your community a better place? San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School (SJCC+CS) offers a paid 1-year-long workforce development program for young adults aged 18 to 27, empowering them to upskill themselves and their career. In addition to personal and professional development, Corpsmembers gain hands-on experience and training in one or more of the following areas under the direction of a Site Supervisor: Natural Resource Management

Corpsmembers gain skills by working on various conservation and community projects such as trail maintenance, park management and stewardship, landscaping, wildfire prevention, and more. Projects are primarily local with opportunity to travel for Emergency Response work and deep forest management projects. This is the place to be if you love working outside and getting your hands dirty while learning how to use power tools like chainsaws. Zero Waste

Corpsmembers collect and recycle items like tires, mattresses, containers and electronic waste. They also rescue food from local grocery stores, compost food waste, and conduct zero waste outreach and public education. If you’re passionate about the environment and want to reduce the waste in our landfills, this program is a great fit! At the end of this program, Corpsmembers will have a foundation of project knowledge, a standard of work ethic, and an understanding of how to apply both to their next job and start their professional career.
