Overview The Recreation Specialist III serves as acting Center Manager in the absence of the Recreation Manager, providing leadership and oversight of daily operations. Demonstrates the ability to independently, professionally, and effectively address operational, staff, and participant-related issues. Exercises sound judgment, initiative, and problem-solving skills to manage time efficiently, adapt programming as needed, and ensure the smooth operation of all assigned programs.

Responsibilities

Assist the Recreation Manager in the planning, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of recreational activities for children and adults with intellectual and/or physical disabilities. Programs may include, but are not limited to: adaptive sports, field trips, dances, walking programs, swimming, track and field, arts and crafts, fishing, bowling, tennis, volleyball, basketball, and other inclusive recreational activities.

Independently develop lesson plans for assigned programs and oversee daily program operations to ensure safety, engagement, and participant success.

Coordinate and oversee the After-School Program, including: developing daily program plans tailored to participant needs, preparing and organizing program materials, assisting with or implementing daily schedules and activities, confirming outing locations and securing transportation, assigning staff to participants, communicating with families regarding schedules, changes, and participant needs, distributing flyers and program updates, and addressing behavioral or program concerns with parents and guardians.

Meet regularly with the Recreation Manager to review After-School Program operations, troubleshoot challenges, reassign staff as needed, and assess participant placement and appropriateness.

Assist in the organization and facilitation of adaptive sports programs, events, and tournaments, which may include coaching, mentoring, learning and participating in wheelchair sports, traveling with teams for weekend or extended trips, and actively engaging with the adaptive sports community.

Assist with participant registration, attendance tracking, and program communication, including confirming participation and notifying families of program or schedule changes.

Safely transport participants and staff using City buses, vans, or other vehicles as required for programs, field trips, and special events, including properly securing passengers and wheelchairs using approved restraint systems.

Assist with the design, production, and distribution of marketing and promotional materials to support programs, services, and events for the Parks & Recreation Department and the Verne Cox Multipurpose Center.

Work evening and weekend shifts as required to support programs, events, and facility operations.

Purchase, inventory, and manage equipment and supplies necessary for program delivery.

Direct and oversee summer camp programming, including preparation of materials, coordination of outings, securing transportation, staff assignments, family communication, daily leadership of camp activities, and post-camp cleanup and evaluation.

Maintain required licenses, certifications, clearances, and job-related requirements without interruption. Work assigned schedule and comply with City timekeeping and attendance policies.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree (B.A.) from an accredited four-year college or university.

Minimum of three (3) years of related experience, including at least one (1) year in a lead or supervisory role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement, or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.

First Aid/CPR/AED certifications, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

CTRS Certification.

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, registration software, email platforms, and Excel data entry.

Ability to create, format, and submit professional written documents, reports, correspondence, and promotional materials.

May require lifting, bending, walking, running and other physical activities required for program support.

PREFERRED : Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Civilian employees accumulate vacation at the following rates:

Less than 6 years of service - two weeks of vacation per year.

From 6 to less than 11 years of service - three weeks of vacation per year.

From 11 to less than 21 years of service - four weeks of vacation per year.

From 21 to less than 26 years of service - five weeks of vacation per year.

From 26 years of service and up - six weeks of vacation per year.

Salary: $23.28 - $26.44 per hour
