About the Role
The Managing Editor oversees editorial and or production operations for peer reviewed scholarly journals, managing workflows from manuscript submission through publication. This role serves as the primary point of contact for editors, publishers, and other journal stakeholders, ensuring service level agreements, quality standards, and production timelines are consistently met.
The Managing Editor brings deep knowledge of scholarly publishing processes and works closely with Editors in Chief and client partners to support journal strategy, growth, and overall health. This role may also supervise editorial associates and support staff.
What You'll Do Serve as the main point of contact for editors, authors, publishers, and internal teams Ensure all contractual requirements and service level agreements are met for assigned journals Create, maintain, and refine editorial and or production workflows and protocols Train, manage, and support editorial associates and peer review staff Act as a power user of manuscript management systems, including workflow optimization and reporting Monitor journal performance indicators such as turnaround time, reviewer engagement, and publication health Proofread and refine stakeholder communications, including decision letters and author guidelines Prepare agendas, reports, and presentations for journal meetings and strategic discussions Support special workflows including publication ethics, CME content, press activity, and social media coordination Manage invited manuscripts, supplements, collections, and special issues Collaborate with editors on issue planning and special issue development Use KGL cloud based tools to support communication, documentation, and productivity Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience Minimum of 5 years experience working in a scholarly journal editorial office Strong understanding of scholarly publishing processes and best practices Excellent written and verbal communication skills Experience with manuscript management systems such as Editorial Manager, ScholarOne Manuscripts, or eJournal Press Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and virtual collaboration tools Availability for at least 20 hours per week during standard business hours Preferred Qualifications
Graduate degree Experience supporting journal related social media or outreach
Work Environment
This is a remote role performed in a general office environment with extensive computer use, prolonged sitting, and regular use of a keyboard and mouse.
Travel
Occasional business travel may be required in the future.
