Position Overview The Specialist is responsible for coordinating recruitment and retention activities of the adult education programs (ABE/GED and ESOL) and for meeting adult education retention, placement, and transitioning goals. This individual is responsible for coordinating the program offerings, creating classes, and managing the intake processes for adult education students.
This is a temporary grant funded position. This grant position will be eligible for participation in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) after 6 consecutive months of continuous employment.
What you will be doing
Resolves student registration issues
Creates classes in the Linux system and makes appropriate updates
Searches for potential new instructors for the department
Organizes, maintains, and updates all departmental records pertaining to adult education students and instructors
Ensures that all student files meet audit requirement standards
Communicates information about adult education program requirements and schedules to other departments
Makes appropriate connections for students to learn about admission, registration, and enrollment in MDC credit programs
Secures student information and performs follow-up
Communicates with adult education students on a regular basis, both in person and by the phone
Works closely with students to identify and refine educational and career goals and provides ongoing advisement to those students
Designs appropriate advertising materials, schedules speakers, works with job placement services, and attends related meetings
Contacts students with excessive absences
Maintains contact with current and past students in an effort to promote retention and educational continuity
Coordinates the annual graduation ceremonies for GED/ESOL students
Reviews instructor performance and compiles teacher evaluation reports
Performs other duties as assigned
What you need to succeed
Bachelor's degree in Education, ESOL, or related field and three (3) years of related experience in adult education or similar program
All degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution
Knowledge and understanding of College organization, goals and objectives, and policies and procedures
Possess effective communication skills both orally and in writing
Possess effective interpersonal and organizational skills
Possess excellent public relations and decision‑making skills
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with academic departments, faculty, staff, students, and the local community
Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
Ability to establish and maintain effective public relations
Ability to work a flexible schedule including days, evenings, and some weekend assignments
Ability to work well with students, faculty and staff
Preferences Certain servicemembers and veterans, and the spouses and family members of such servicemembers and veterans, will receive preference and priority for this job vacancy. In addition, they may be eligible to receive waivers for postsecondary educational requirements outlined in this job vacancy.
