
Day Camp Assistant Director - Kalamazoo

Overview
Are you interested in making the world a better place? By working as the Day Camp Director, you will serve in a leadership role to change the lives of local Girl Scouts in the greater Kalamazoo community. In this role, you’ll coordinate lesson plans for 8 weeks of engaging experiences for girls, ensuring that every day is different, and every week brings new adventure. You’ll get a breath of fresh air while interacting with young people outdoors.
The Day Camp Director will be a positive role model for staff and day campers. With the Assistant Director, Day Camp Director will also ensure the happiness and safety of the girls who attend Day Camp, keep daily and weekly functions of day camp running up to the standards of GSHOM, and assist in overseeing the job performance of the Day Camp staff.
Essential Job Functions
Lead in the Camp Director’s absence; complete daily and weekly paperwork and reports as needed; fulfill the requirements for each weekly program.
Assist in the daily functions of the day camp operations.
Put together program activities that meet the requirements listed in the Summer Camp Guide; supervise the day camp counseling staff to ensure that the program needs are achieved.
Ensure campers are properly supervised and safe at all times; implement safety guidelines stated by the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan.
Handle any type of conflict that may arise between counselors, parents, and between campers.
Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the mission and outcomes; provide the day camp staff with the resources they need to ensure the quality of the program such as planned activities that match the weekly program.
Actively participate in all program areas as needed; provide a weekly meeting with the staff to discuss program quality, any concerns, staff check‑in, and support needs.
Assist in the pre‑day camp training and the post‑camp close‑up.
Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff; recognize personal health needs; ensure medication is administered as needed.
Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance; report repairs needed promptly to Camp Director; act as health officer when required.
Set a good example to campers, staff, and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, active involvement, and daily functions of Day Camp.
Represent the camp and GSHOM when interacting with parents or community members; provide parents appropriate feedback and information so their campers have a successful camp experience.
Follow safety and security protocols when campers are in public while presenting a positive image of the camp and GSHOM.

Understand and work with the mission of Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan (GSHOM): Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.
Provide supervision for campers while transported to and from camp or during scheduled field trips off the camp property.
Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
Provide daily and weekly program information to the Camp Director and supply lists for upcoming weeks.
Pull reports for camp rosters and provide camp‑related materials to parents via email.
Relationships The Assistant Day Camp Director will oversee alongside the Camp Director the daily counselor staff and assist with programming needs.
Equipment Used Understand and use equipment such as the stove, oven, and sanitation chemicals; use equipment that may be needed for program activities.
Qualifications (Minimum Education and Experience)
Must be 21 years of age or older.
Must obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR (Level 2).
Submit a health history record and form prior to the first day of work.
Ability to interact with all age levels.
Ability to submit information for background checks.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Understanding of the development needs of youth.
Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.
Demonstrated knowledge and skill in designated camp program areas.
Physical Aspects of the Job
Communicate and work with groups of varying ages and skill levels; provide necessary instruction.
Observe staff and camper behavior; enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures; apply behavior‑management techniques.
Identify and respond to environmental and other hazards.
Respond to emergencies requiring first aid; carry out fire, evacuation, illness, or injury situations; maintain constant supervision.
Physical Requirements The position requires that a staff member can actively participate in program needs, be outside with girls, navigate varied terrains for extended periods, remain actively aware of surroundings and safety, and lift at least 50 lbs.
Compensation Wages start at $16/hour.
Locations & Employment Dates Kalamazoo Regional Center Day Camp: June 1 – August 14, 2026.
