Divisional/Desk Overview Goldman Sachs has been engaged in the commodities business since 1981 and is one of the leading players in the commodities markets across a wide variety of financial and physical products. It operates a fully integrated global commodities business that is able to offer services to clients spanning derivatives risk management and advisory, physical trading and logistics and structured finance products.
The Commodities Structured Finance team deploys Goldman Sachs balance sheet in commodity-linked financing solutions to clients (e.g. oil & gas companies, conventional and biofuel refiners, miners, conventional and renewable power plants, steel mills, etc.) often with integrated commodity price risk management / hedging. Transaction types include inventory financing, supply chain intermediation, secured and unsecured lending, derivatives, preferred equity, commodity leasing, backleverage and monetization of future commodity production. The team looks at financing and structured derivative opportunities in the Americas and is located in New York. The role will require in person attendance in the New York office during the work week and periodically requires late night and weekend work.
The desk aims to deploy capital in situations that are complex, time-sensitive, and/or where it can leverage intellectual capital from across the Goldman Sachs Commodities, Credit, and Investment Banking franchises to inform due diligence and offer creative financing solutions. Analysts will work on transactions across client types, commodity industries, and geographies.
Job Summary & Responsibilities
Work with other Trading desks and Sales / Investment Banking coverage to identify potential transactions and clients across all commodity industries and products
Work with senior team members to proactively pitch and originate new transactions and business in conjunction with GS coverage and build relationships with clients and advisors
Provide leverage to senior team members via helping to develop term sheets, marketing materials and internal committee presentations and produce detailed financial models, scenario and credit analysis
Work with control side personnel during execution to ensure transaction approval and support
Conduct in-depth market analysis, and company / asset-level due diligence
Structure and price transactions as part of collaborative team
Manage ongoing commodity, credit and funding risks post-execution
Basic Qualifications
6 months – 18 months of relevant work experience ideally in investment banking, credit investing / underwriting, or corporate finance
Proficiency in financial modeling, valuation, and financial statements analysis
Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to multi-task and work well under pressure
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Strong work ethic and high levels of motivation
Ability to drive projects and initiatives
Ability to build relationships with internal and external clients
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in a commodities, structured finance, and/or credit-focused role working on transaction negotiation and execution, navigating internal processes and building transaction consensus and support
Understanding of payoffs, Greeks and credit exposure on derivative products
Salary Range The expected base salary for this New York, New York, United States-based position is $110000-$125000. In addition, you may be eligible for a discretionary bonus if you are an active employee as of fiscal year-end.
