Job Summary Idaho Power is looking for a Real Time/Day Ahead Energy Trader or Senior to join our Power Supply team. The role is critical to the communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon, providing reliable and affordable energy.
Responsibilities The Energy Trader sells energy and energy products in wholesale markets on an hourly/daily basis with supervision. Key duties include outbound marketing, commercial negotiation, deliverability assessment, structuring and negotiation, credit and risk evaluation, transmission purchasing/reserving, transaction/accounting recording, delivery scheduling, generation dispatch coordination, and compliance with industry procedures and regulatory requirements. The position requires working in the Real Time (Hour Ahead) and Day Ahead markets on a variable rotating shift schedule covering a 24/7/365 trading desk.
Additional responsibilities: support natural gas energy traders, monitor market conditions, coordinate nominations, ensure reliable gas flows, manage real‑time scheduling, storage optimization, asset management, respond to operational changes, weather impacts, and system constraints. Requires strong communication with traders and system operators to maintain balanced positions, minimize risk, and support commercial and operational objectives in a fast‑paced environment.

Minimum Requirements Energy Trader Education
Bachelor's degree in economics, finance, business or engineering
OR
An equivalent combination of training and/or experience
Preferred
Advanced degree in a business discipline
Experience
4 years in natural gas or power trading/scheduling environment
OR 4 years in natural gas or power system operations (advanced degree may substitute 1 year, NERC certification may substitute 2 years)
Preferred
4 years in power or natural gas trading/scheduling with exposure to real‑time day ahead and term trading and NERC certification
Senior Energy Trader Education
Bachelor's degree in economics, finance, business or engineering
OR
An equivalent combination of training and/or experience
Preferred
Advanced degree in a business discipline
Experience
6 years in natural gas or power trading environment or system operations
Advanced degree may substitute 1 year; NERC certification may substitute 2 years
Preferred: 6 years in power or natural gas trading with exposure to real‑time day ahead and term trading and NERC certification
Physical Requirements Work at a desk/computer for extended periods, use office equipment, fine motor skills (typing, dialing phones, filing). Occasional lifts of no more than 10 lbs. May perform additional tasks as assigned.
Additional Requirements Real Time desk: 60% of schedule, variable 12‑hour shift averaging 40 hrs/week. Day Ahead desk: 40% of schedule, 5 8‑hour days averaging 50 hrs/week with start approx 5:00 a.m. MST. Infrequent travel with overnight stays may be required. Regular and punctual attendance required.
Additional Information The Day Ahead Energy Trader may work an occasional 12‑hour shift. The Real Time Energy Trader will be required to work 12‑hour shifts.
