Our Harper Books Art Dept team is currently seeking an Assistant Art Director to join the fast‑paced, creative team. In this role, the Assistant Art Director will design and art direct covers for a wide range of titles under the Harper imprints. Our titles range from literary to commercial fiction/non‑fiction, celebrity memoirs, cookbooks, fantasy, sci‑fi and romance. Our ideal candidate would be comfortable working across all of these genres.

Responsibilities

Works closely with senior art directors, editors, illustrators, photographers and freelance designers in creation of covers.

Designs or supervises design and manages all phases of design process and production process.

Handles projects/tasks assigned in a timely way by being a trouble‑shooter, problem solver and deadline maker.

Qualifications

7 years experience in publishing for the adult trade market.

Diverse design sensibility in both fiction (literary to fantasy) and non‑fiction.

Strong typographic knowledge and skills. Must be an independent and strong thinker.

Must be extremely well organized, able to manage many projects simultaneously.

Needs excellent communication, interpersonal and project management skills.

Should have strong Mac skills including AdobeCC, basic retouching and photo/image compositing.

The salary range for this position is $85,000-$95,000. We recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company. As a result, we aim for flexibility in structuring competitive compensation offers to ensure we are able to attract the best candidates. The quoted salary range represents our good faith estimate as to what our ideal candidates are likely to expect, and we tailor our offers within the range based on the selected candidate's experience, industry knowledge, technical and communication skills, and other factors that may prove relevant during the interview process.
