Outside Machinist
Hutco, Inc. is seeking experienced Outside Machinists to support shipyard operations at the Newport News Shipbuilding facility. Candidates must have at least four years of shipyard or naval experience as a First-Class Machinist. This role demands familiarity with shipboard mechanical systems, the ability to work from technical drawings, and a strong commitment to safety and quality. Primary responsibilities include: Perform mechanical repairs, overhauls, and installations on shipboard equipment. Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, schematics, and technical manuals. Work with various systems and equipment including winches, anchor windlasses, steering gear, air compressors, valves, and pumps, diesel engines, gas turbines, reduction gears, propulsion systems, shafts, propellers, rudders, generators, steam turbines, hydraulic systems, elevators, doors, weapons systems, and deck equipment. Conduct valve overhauls (steam/WOG), lube oil flushing, hydrostatic testing, and optical alignment. Perform shaft alignment and precision fitting using tools such as micrometers, dial indicators, rulers, calipers, torque wrenches, grinders, boring bars, drill presses, and portable mills. Adhere to all technical, quality, and safety standards per OSHA and shipyard regulations. Required qualifications include: Experience: 4+ years as a First-Class Machinist in shipyard or naval settings. Technical proficiency: Skilled in precision measuring instruments and alignment tools, familiarity with hull insert installations, fasteners, and shipbuilding nomenclature, capable of working from blueprints and performing complex mechanical work. Physical requirements: Capable of lifting 50 lbs regularly and working in confined spaces, must be able to climb ladders, work at heights, and perform physically demanding tasks, tolerance for varied temperatures and humidity conditions. Work environment and physical demands include: Lifting/carrying (up to 50 lbs) Standing/walking (75%+ of shift) Climbing ladders Working in confined spaces Exposure to dust, fumes, odors Use of tools and machinery Visual/hearing/talking Temperature extremes Reporting structure: Reports to: Assigned Shop Foreman or Project Supervisor Works with: Planning, QA, Safety, and Production Teams Supervision level: Independent task management expected after onboarding A limited benefit plan is available to Hutco Inc. employees through Essential Staff Care.
