This role supports both bidding and awarded work and plays a critical part in ensuring project success from pursuit through execution.This is an onsite role and requires close collaboration with operations, leadership, and external partners.Key Responsibilities:Prepare detailed, competitive cost estimates for heavy civil construction projectsAnalyze drawings, specifications, and contract documents to confirm complete project scopeDevelop quantity takeoffs and price labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and suppliersUtilize industry-standard estimating software (including HCSS HeavyBid) in accordance with established processesMaintain and update estimating databases, cost libraries, labor rates, and equipment ratesAnalyze historical project data to improve estimate accuracy and future bid performanceIdentify project risks, constructability concerns, cost drivers, and long-lead procurement itemsSolicit, evaluate, and level subcontractor and supplier pricingPrepare bid forms, instructions to bidders, and supporting documentationCoordinate closely with operations to review schedules, logistics, scopes, and execution strategiesSupport seamless handoff from estimate to project budgetTrack bid history and prospective opportunitiesMonitor construction and material cost trends impacting estimatesEvaluate alternate means and methods to identify cost-effective solutionsCollaborate with internal teams to support proposal and technical requirementsMaintain strong working relationships with clients, design teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal stakeholdersPerform work safely and remain alert to jobsite and office safety requirementsPerform additional duties as assignedSupervisory Responsibilities:This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:Advanced ability to prepare accurate budgets and cost estimatesStrong understanding of heavy civil construction methods and industry standardsKnowledge of project cost control, revenue models, and cost-to-complete conceptsProficiency with estimating software, particularly HCSS HeavyBidExperience with digital takeoff and document review tools (e.g., Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff)Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skillsExcellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple bids under deadline pressureAbility to clearly communicate estimate assumptions and findingsHigh attention to detail and ability to identify discrepanciesStrong written and verbal communication skillsAbility to work collaboratively in a fast-paced team environmentWillingness to travel up to 25% as neededMinimum Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience)Valid driver’s licenseAbility to pass standard pre-employment screeningsPreferred Qualifications:10+ years of heavy civil construction estimating experienceExperience estimating public sector projects for local, state, or federal agenciesFamiliarity with transportation and utility infrastructure projectsWork Environment:This role operates in a fast-paced, multi-project office environment, with occasional time spent at active job sites. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, with flexibility required during bid periods or for field coordination.
