Overview CBS News is looking for an Overnight Weekend Assignment Desk Editor for our New York‑based National Desk. This Assignment Editor helps facilitate editorial coverage decisions for all shows, working directly with the Senior Vice President of Newsgathering, National Editor, Bureau Chiefs and senior producers for CBS Mornings, CBS Evening News, Weekend News, CBS Face the Nation, CBS Streaming, CBS Newspath and CBS News Special events to ensure all are aware of national news across the country. The role also confirms details of stories of interest, gathers news elements and deploys coverage teams as needed.
Schedule Wednesday – Sunday 12 AM–8 AM
Responsibilities
Oversee domestic newsgathering for the network and select top stories to share companywide during the overnight hours, including breaking news in all 50 states and U.S. territories.
Stay current on news and use a broad range of local, national and online sources, including CBS News affiliates.
Quickly gather and disseminate critical information, verify accuracy, and secure interviews and video coverage.
Manage multiple priorities, balancing editorial and logistical components on tight deadlines.
Maintain consistent, timely outreach to media contacts and sources during breaking news events.
Conduct own reporting to confirm details by contacting police/fire departments, emergency services and other agencies via email, calls or social media.
Identify and secure compelling visual content from social media platforms.
Write “What’s Happening” planning notes that inform the organization of news coverage.
Track stories across all news programs to monitor evolving threads with the latest information.
Make independent and informed editorial decisions.
Arrange travel and deploy producers, videographers, photographers and audio crews as necessary.
Maintain open communication with desk members and senior leadership.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, or equivalent experience.
5+ years of editorial experience.
Additional Qualifications
Exemplary written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail and accuracy.
Additional Information Hiring salary range: $90,000 – $95,000. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, 401(k), life insurance, disability benefits, tuition assistance and PTO or as otherwise dictated by the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
