Seeking a Mechanical Engineer- Structural/Packaging for a direct hire opportunity with our client in San Francisco, CA.

Salary is between $200,000 - $300,000 per year (based on experience)

As a Mechanical Engineer focused on Structural / Packaging, you will own the physical design of our chiller platform. You will be responsible for structural frame design, component packaging, serviceability, and manufacturability. This role requires strong skills in mechanical design, structural analysis, and practical experience bringing large industrial equipment from prototype to production.

Responsibilities

Lead structural frame design and lifting analysis for an ACC chiller unit

Develop 3D CAD models for the complete chiller assembly, including component layout, piping routing, and electrical integration

Complete refrigerant piping design and stress analysis per ASME B31.5

Coordinate packaging of major components including compressors, condenser coils (18-24 EC fans), evaporators, pumps, and electrical panels

Develop shipping and transport strategy, including modular shipping options for oversized loads

Work with contract manufacturers on frame fabrication, assembly tooling, and production processes

Create assembly drawings, BOMs, and manufacturing documentation

Support prototype assembly, including leak testing (nitrogen/helium) and pressure testing

Drive compliance with pressure vessel certification (ASME BPVC) where applicable

Qualifications

BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field

5+ years of experience in mechanical design of industrial equipment, preferably HVAC, refrigeration, or similar packaged systems

PE license preferred.

Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar) and 2D drafting

Experience with structural analysis and FEA for equipment frames and supports

Knowledge of refrigerant piping design and ASME B31.5 requirements

Hands on experience with prototype builds and manufacturing processes (welding, sheet metal, assembly)

Understanding of design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for serviceability principles

Experience working with contract manufacturers and managing fabrication vendors

Experience with large packaged equipment (chillers, rooftop units, air handlers)

Background in pressure vessel design and ASME BPVC compliance

Experience with vibration analysis and isolation for rotating equipment
