
The Interior Designer II plays a key role in supporting and leading high‑end residential design projects within a collaborative studio environment. This position is ideal for a technically skilled and design‑savvy individual who is comfortable taking ownership of smaller projects or serving as a strong contributor on larger project teams. Responsibilities include producing detailed construction documents, managing FF&E selections, coordinating with vendors and contractors, and supporting presentations and client communications. The ideal candidate demonstrates initiative, organization, and creativity, with a strong grasp of design standards and an eagerness to grow into greater leadership within the firm. This role offers the opportunity to deepen project experience and expand creative and technical skills alongside a team of experienced designers.
Responsibilities & Duties
Lead small residential design projects or provide strong support to Senior Designers on larger projects, ensuring each phase is executed with accuracy, efficiency, and creativity.
Produce and compile detailed construction documents, including floor plans, elevations, sections, and specifications, with a high level of technical precision.
Develop advanced drawings for custom millwork and cabinetry, including dimensions, joinery details, and installation instructions that clearly communicate design intent.
Serve as a point of contact for contractors, vendors, and clients, coordinating communication and approvals with the Senior Designer as needed.
Select and specify finishes, furnishings, fixtures, and materials with confidence, using sound design judgment and a deep understanding of project goals and client needs.
Review and approve purchase orders for accuracy and alignment with budgets, timelines, and project specifications.
Demonstrate in‑depth knowledge of FF&E for residential projects, including sourcing, pricing, and coordinating custom and off‑the‑shelf furnishings.
Specify appropriate materials and finishes that balance beauty, function, durability, and code compliance.
Apply a thorough understanding of kitchen and bath design, including layout standards, product selection, clearances, and code requirements.
Interpret and apply construction standards and best practices to ensure design solutions are buildable and well‑coordinated with consultants and trades.
Create and manage product and furnishing orders through Design Manager or similar software, maintaining detailed records of order status, approvals, and delivery timelines.
Review shop drawings, material submittals, and samples for accuracy and consistency with project specifications, providing timely feedback or approvals.
Understand and translate client goals into thoughtful design solutions that reflect their lifestyle and preferences while upholding the firm’s design standards.
Support the preparation and delivery of client presentations, contributing strong visual and verbal communication skills to articulate design ideas with clarity and professionalism.
Combine creativity with function, bringing design concepts to life through sketches, renderings, digital drawings, and physical presentations.
Manage select aspects of projects independently and step into a leadership role when the Senior Designer is unavailable, helping ensure continuity and progress.
Assist with construction administration tasks including site visits, punch lists, coordination with contractors, and follow‑up on project details.
Stay current with vendors, materials, and product innovations to support informed design decisions and maintain a high standard of quality.
Provide guidance and mentorship to Design Assistants and junior team members, contributing to a supportive and collaborative studio environment.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the design team and ensure the success of the project and the studio.
Qualifications & Skills
Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design
Proficient in CAD
Four + years of experience in Residential Interior Design
Detail oriented and passionate about design.
Proficient in Adobe Suite, especially InDesign
Microsoft Office Suite
Familiar with Sketchup
Working Conditions
Full Time position (40 hours) per week
Located in Richmond, VA or Birmingham, AL
Must have working vehicle to travel to project sites and between offices
Must feel comfortable working interactively with teammates and industry partners of our three offices located in Virginia and Alabama
Some travel will be required
Physical Requirements
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Ability to view and interpret detailed drawings, renderings, and technical documents both digitally and on paper.
Must be able to occasionally stand, walk, bend, and reach as needed to review materials, samples, or perform site visits.
Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds (e.g., material boards, sample boxes, or presentation materials).
Must be able to clearly communicate with clients, team members, and vendors in both in‑person and virtual settings.
May require occasional travel to job sites, vendor showrooms, or client meetings.
