Consumer & Investigative Reporter

Hearst Television, Kansas City, MO USA

National multimedia company reaching 24 million households

Duration: Full Time

KMBC-TV, the ABC affiliate in Kansas City, is seeking a Consumer & Investigative Reporter to join our newsroom and collaborate closely with our award-winning investigative team.

This is a high-impact, enterprise role focused on exposing consumer issues, holding institutions accountable, and helping viewers navigate the problems that affect their daily lives. The ideal candidate has a proven ability to originate, develop, and report compelling consumer stories across broadcast, digital, and social platforms.

We are less focused on years of experience and more focused on demonstrated results—storytelling that leads to change, engagement, and real community impact.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop and report original consumer-focused enterprise and investigative stories for yourself and other members of the team, in partnership with the KMBC Investigative Unit.
  • Generate story ideas that identify unfair practices, systemic failures, scams, fraud, pricing issues, and public accountability concerns.
  • Report across platforms: on-air, digital, mobile, and social, delivering content where audiences are.
  • Conduct informed interviews, build strong sources, and pursue stories that go beyond the surface.
  • Gather and edit compelling video and sound, working with or without a photographer.
  • Contribute real-time updates, explainers, and follow-ups across digital and social channels.
  • Collaborate with producers, managers, and digital teams to maximize story impact.
  • Manage multiple enterprise projects while meeting daily deadlines.

This role will also include general assignment reporting and occasional backup anchoring on Saturday and Sunday mornings. While part of the position, this is not the primary focus.

What We’re Looking For

  • A proven, multi-platform track record of creating consumer or accountability journalism that resonates with audiences.
  • Strong enterprise and investigative instincts with the ability to uncover details and pursue complex stories.
  • A demo reel and digital portfolio that reflect your daily work, not just highlights.
  • Clear, compelling writing that supports strong visuals.
  • Confidence using modern field technology, editing tools, and mobile workflows.
  • Excellent time management, adaptability, and collaborative skills.
  • The ability to work under deadline pressure while maintaining accuracy and fairness.
  • Unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity and ethical standards.
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends and mornings.
  • Related military experience will be considered.
