UI UX Designer, Vehicle Charging
Tesla Motors, Inc., Palo Alto, California, United States, 94306
What to Expect
We're looking for a UI/UX Designer to join the Energy Design team and own the vehicle touchscreen interface for Supercharging, AC Charging, and DC Fast Charging worldwide.
You’ll design how drivers find, navigate to, and interact with chargers—building map visualizations that surface the best charging options, display pricing, amenities, and charging network details, and guide owners seamlessly from route planning to plug‑in. You’ll also craft end‑year stories like Charging Passport that show owners how they charged at home, work, and on the road. Our goal is to take the complexity of global charging infrastructure and distill it into experiences that are intuitive, fast, and unmistakably Tesla.
The Energy Design team designs experiences across Supercharging, Home Charging, Solar, Powerwall, and the Tesla App. We’re a small team that moves quickly, collaborates across the company, and ships work that reaches millions of users. We look for designers who are multitalented, flexible, and comfortable navigating ambiguity. This position is located in Palo Alto, California.
What You'll Do
Lead design on charging product initiatives from discovery through launch—balancing UX research, competitive analysis, prototyping, and visual design.
Design and improve vehicle UI for Supercharging, third‑party DC fast chargers, and home/destination charging across international markets.
Build interactive Figma prototypes to validate concepts with users and communicate intent to engineers; motion design prototyping is a plus.
Partner directly with engineers to understand technical constraints and translate complex functionality into intuitive simplicity.
Use customer interviews, analytics, and field data to inform design decisions and measure how designs perform for real users.
Work across teams—Charging Product, Vehicle Software, Energy Engineering, and Leadership—in a culture where asking questions and sharing context is the norm.
Present work to partners, stakeholders, and senior leaders regularly; own your rationale and iterate based on feedback.
Contribute to and extend our design system, ensuring new UI is consistent with vehicle interface standards.
What You'll Bring
Degree in Graphic Design, UI/UX, Human‑Computer Interaction, related field, or equivalent experience.
Portfolio that reflects creative thinking, range, and modern, minimalist taste; all candidates must submit a portfolio or personal website to be considered.
Deep experience in interaction design and prototyping for different form factors and interfaces.
Proficiency in Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Jira, and Confluence.
Experience shipping products to millions of users.
Ability to handle ambiguity—you’re comfortable starting with an unclear problem and iterating toward clarity and simplicity.
Previous experience designing for vehicle infotainment, maps, or complex data visualization is a plus.
Passion for sustainable electric vehicle charging and renewable energy.
