JOB DESCRIPTION The Director of Engineering is responsible for supervising and overseeing all property and equipment preventive maintenance programs, repairs, life safety systems, and utilities at Shangri-La Resort & Golf Club. This role ensures the protection of resort assets while delivering a safe, well‑maintained, and exceptional guest and employee experience. The Director of Engineering operates in compliance with all corporate, local, state, and federal codes, regulations, and safety standards, while assisting in the overall administration and strategic planning of the Engineering Department.
REPORTS TO General Manager
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership & Administration
Interview, hire, train, and develop Engineering Department employees.
Recommend and conduct performance evaluations; address performance issues; provide coaching, discipline, and termination recommendations when appropriate.
Foster open communication, teamwork, and accountability within the department.
Communicate clearly—both verbally and in writing—to provide direction and expectations to staff.
Comply with attendance standards and maintain regular availability, including on‑call responsibilities as required.
Maintenance & Operations
Troubleshoot and repair malfunctions in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and other building systems throughout the resort.
Perform and oversee scheduled preventive maintenance assignments to ensure optimal equipment performance and longevity.
Coordinate, monitor, and ensure compliance with all service contracts.
Maintain brand standards and follow up on inspection findings and deficiencies.
Implement and maintain preventative maintenance program for both rooms and public areas.
Guest & Departmental Support
Respond courteously and promptly to guest questions, concerns, complaints, and service requests to ensure high guest satisfaction.
Collaborate with Department Managers to identify maintenance needs and ensure timely resolution of internal work orders.
Maintain the resort's exterior appearance and curb appeal, including landscaping, painting, snow removal, and general grounds upkeep.
Pool, Safety & Compliance
Oversee servicing of the resort pools, including chemical balancing, filter cleaning, and completion of required maintenance logs and records.
Monitor and maintain all life safety systems and utilities.
Actively participate in Shangri-La's Safety Plan, emergency preparedness, and energy efficiency initiatives.
Identify potential safety hazards or security concerns and take appropriate corrective action.
Capital Planning & Asset Protection
Assist the Director of Finance and the General Manager with the development of the annual Capital Plan.
Support long‑term planning for building systems, equipment replacement, and infrastructure improvements.
Other Duties
Perform additional job‑related duties as assigned to support resort operations.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS Required Skills and Abilities
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must successfully pass a background check.
Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with guests, management, and co‑workers.
Must be OSHA trained.
Must be able to follow Health Department Guidelines.
Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, extended hours, and irregular shifts as business needs require.
Demonstrated teamwork mindset with a willingness to assist co‑workers as needed.
Strong working knowledge across multiple skilled trades, including HVAC, electrical, carpentry, drywall, painting, plumbing, roofing, and landscaping.
Ability to troubleshoot and repair routine mechanical and electrical system malfunctions.
Ability to identify safety hazards and security issues and respond appropriately.
Strong responsiveness to maintenance‑related concerns and complaints.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this position, the associate is regularly required to stand and walk for extended periods; use hands to handle, feel, or operate tools and equipment; reach with hands and arms; and communicate verbally. The associate may occasionally be required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and lift objects weighing more than 50 pounds. This role requires physical stamina, mental focus, and the ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast‑paced hospitality environment while maintaining excellent guest service standards.
WORK ENVIRONMENT This position requires work in both indoor and outdoor environments, with exposure to varying climate conditions, mechanical rooms, and resort grounds.
