The National Association of Letter Carriers, an AFL-CIO affiliated union representing 290,000 active and retired letter carriers, is seeking a Digital Communications Specialist. The position is based in-person in Washington, D.C., and is an exciting opportunity to be a part of a growing digital team.
The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented collaborator with excellent written and oral communication skills and strong attention to detail to make complex materials engaging and accessible to audiences. This position will require a candidate who can manage multiple projects simultaneously in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. Effective communication, strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and willingness to learn and contribute are essential. The ideal candidate must be able to draft, proofread and edit concise, timely, and engaging digital messaging for all the union’s platforms.
The Digital Communications Specialist will assist in the management of NALC’s website, app and social media accounts, including content development, scheduling posts, tracking, reporting and monitoring metrics, live events and other major event coverage, and designing graphics and other materials to engage NALC’s audiences. The Specialist will engage with various staff to ensure that the union’s community service and other priorities are amplified across all platforms. In addition, the position will assist in producing, recording, editing, distributing and promoting NALC’s podcast.
Position Requirements and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university, or equivalent experience
- Proficient knowledge of social media platforms; experience with social media management tools
- Experience with on-the-ground/live event coverage, podcasting, editing and distribution tools, familiarity with various print and digital design tools
- General commitment to the principles of organized labor
- Some travel required
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to draft, proofread, and edit concise, timely, and engaging digital content across multiple platforms.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy, especially when translating complex or technical information into accessible, user-friendly language.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with major social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, X/Twitter, Instagram, YouTube) and experience using social media management tools for scheduling, monitoring, and reporting.
- Basic to intermediate skills in graphic design and digital content creation (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite or similar tools) for web, app, email, and social media.
- Experience with website content management systems (CMS) and basic understanding of web publishing best practices.
- Familiarity with podcast production, including recording, editing, distribution, and promotion.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and respond quickly to emerging needs or breaking news.
- Collaborative mindset with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with staff across departments.
- Curiosity and willingness to learn new tools, platforms, and best practices in digital communications.
- Experience with, but not limited to, the following tools:
Writing, Editing & Content Management
- Word processing and editing tools (Microsoft Word, Google Docs)
- CMS publishing tools (WordPress, Drupal, or similar) for posting and updating web content
- Basic HTML formatting within a CMS (headings, links, lists, embeds)
Email & Newsletters
- Email platforms (Mailchimp, Action Network, Constant Contact, or similar)
- Email content builders and templates
- Basic email list segmentation and analytics
Social Media & Publishing
- Major social platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, YouTube, TikTok)
- Social scheduling/monitoring tools (Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Buffer, or similar)\
- Social listening/monitoring features (keyword/hashtag and comment monitoring within platforms or tools)
Design & Multimedia (Foundational)
- Basic graphic creation tools (Canva, Adobe Express, or similar) for simple social graphics, web banners, and thumbnails
- Basic familiarity with photo editing (Photoshop, Lightroom, or similar is a plus)
- Comfortable working with video files (uploading, adding captions, thumbnails, basic trims)
Analytics & Optimization
- Platform-native insights (Facebook/Instagram Insights, X/Twitter Analytics, YouTube Studio, etc.)
- Basic use of Google Analytics (GA4) to check page performance and traffic sources
Productivity & Collaboration
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and/or Google Workspace
- Project and task management tools (Asana, Trello, Monday.com, or similar)
- Internal communication platforms (Teams, Slack, or similar)
